The production will make full use of Italy, with filming not only at Cinecittà but also in Rome’s Lazio region and Tuscany. The studios have built a massive backlot with a replica of the Roman Forum. Italy’s tax rebates, which cover up to 40% of eligible production costs, will help support the production.
The show’s costume design is led by Carlo Poggioli, known for “The Leopard” and “The New Pope,” and Italian line producer Nicola Rosada, who has experience on Netflix projects such as “The Decameron” and “Emily in Paris,” is overseeing the shoot. Cinecittà Studios CEO Manuela Cacciamani said, “I am honored that Netflix has chosen our studios and our sets to create such a spectacular, ambitious series that is eagerly anticipated around the world. It is a sign of the credibility and reputation that Cinecittà enjoys internationally.” She added, “I am even more honored by the trust placed in our skilled workforce and in our art department, which is collaborating on the creation of truly spectacular sets.”
This new “Assassin’s Creed” series marks the first time the franchise is set in ancient Rome, joining previous settings like Egypt, Greece, Renaissance Italy, feudal Japan, and revolutionary France. Fans of the video game series, which has sold over 230 million units globally since 2007, can expect a fresh story while keeping the franchise’s core themes of secret wars and powerful artifacts called Pieces of Eden.
