Jerry O’Connell recently shared a surprising story about how a simple political comment led to a physical confrontation with his wife, Rebecca Romijn, and their teenage daughters.

During a March appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast, the actor recalled the night of the 2024 presidential election. He admitted that he was caught off guard by the results and began “spitballing” ideas about why the night was going the way it was.

The actor suggested that the lack of a primary after Joe Biden stepped down might have been a strategic mistake for the Democrats. “I said something along the lines of ‘there was no planning. This is what they get. There should have been a primary.’ I said something along those lines, you know, like I was just spitballing ideas,” he explained.

This casual analysis did not sit well with the other three people in his California home, who were feeling the weight of the election results. O’Connell described his wife and their 17-year-old twin daughters, Dolly and Charlie, reacting with immediate frustration.

“My wife and daughters, without saying anything, became physical with me. They were filled with rage,” he told Maher. He joked that living in a household with three passionate women in California means he has to be very careful about the jokes or comments he makes regarding sensitive topics.

Bill Maher offered his own take on the situation, telling O’Connell that he refuses to stay quiet just to keep the peace at home. “I am not going to tuck my tail between my legs and just shut the f— up,” Maher said, encouraging the actor to stand by his true thoughts.

Despite the minor family scuffle, O’Connell noted that he had been a supporter of Kamala Harris throughout her campaign and even attended events for her in Georgia earlier that year.

The family has a history of being politically active and previously voiced their support for the Biden-Harris administration at the 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. At the time, Romijn praised Biden’s experience, stating that “the older you get, the wiser you get,” while Jerry added that they were big fans of the work he was doing.

As of March, he is preparing for a special 40th-anniversary reunion tour for his breakout film, Stand By Me. He will be joining former costars Wil Wheaton and Corey Feldman for live screenings and Q&A sessions starting in late March, which will include tributes to their late friend River Phoenix.

Rebecca Romijn is currently reaching new heights in her own career, particularly within the sci-fi and superhero genres. She is starring in the fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Number One, which is currently airing on Paramount+.

Additionally, major casting news recently confirmed that she will return to the big screen as Mystique in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for a December release.

The couple continues to balance their high-profile careers with raising their daughters in Los Angeles, even if things get a little heated during election cycles. His family remains a close-knit unit that isn’t afraid to express their opinions.
