First Look at Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape Drops in ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Trailer
HBO has shared new footage from its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, giving fans their first look at Paapa Essiedu as the well-known character Severus Snape. The show, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is a full reboot with a new cast and a fresh take on the story.
In the teaser, Essiedu appears only for a short moment. He is seen performing magic in a dark hallway inside Hogwarts. The scene is quick, but it has already caught a lot of attention online. HBO later released an image of the character standing alone in a snowy setting, adding more curiosity around his role.
Many fans noticed that the trailer does not show much of Snape. Reports suggest this may be intentional. The character plays a major role in the story, so the creators may be saving bigger scenes for later promotions.

Essiedu takes over the role from Alan Rickman, who played Snape in the original films. The casting has led to mixed reactions. Some viewers are excited to see a new version of the character, while others have criticized the decision.
According to interviews with The Times, Essiedu has faced serious online abuse since his casting was announced. He spoke openly about the situation and shared how it has affected him. “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he said. He explained that seeing these messages online has been difficult. “I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.”
Despite this, he said he is motivated by the story’s message. “The themes that run through Harry Potter are of love triumphing over hate — of acceptance. And that’s why I’m doing it.”
The new series is based on the books by J.K. Rowling and will retell the story across several seasons. The first season focuses on Harry’s early time at Hogwarts. The show is expected to premiere around Christmas 2026.

The project has already sparked wider discussion. Rowling remains a controversial figure due to her public comments on social issues. At the same time, HBO executive Casey Bloys has confirmed the series may not release new seasons every year, which has raised questions about long-term planning for the cast.
For now, the teaser keeps many details hidden. It introduces the tone of the show while leaving key characters like Snape mostly in the shadows. More footage is expected to be released closer to the premiere.
