First Look at John Lithgow as Dumbledore in ‘Harry Potter’ Series Revealed
HBO Max has officially dropped the trailer for its new Harry Potter series, giving fans their first real look at the cast in action and confirming a surprise premiere date: Christmas Day 2026.
The announcement and trailer come just a day after the first image of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter was revealed. This new adaptation will cover the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first book in J.K. Rowling’s bestselling series.
The story follows young Harry, who is treated poorly by his Aunt Petunia (played by Bel Powley) and forced to live in a cupboard under the stairs. On his 11th birthday, a letter arrives inviting him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“There is nothing special about Harry Potter – at least that’s what his Aunt Petunia always says. On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past,” the series logline explains.

The trailer shows Harry running from bullies, discovering the magic of Hogwarts, and meeting Hagrid (Nick Frost), who tells him that his late parents were “the kindest and bravest” people he had ever met. We also see Harry riding the Hogwarts Express with Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton).
Fans got a full look at John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, fully dressed in his iconic robe and beard, a sight that brings the beloved headmaster to life in a way we haven’t seen before. Janet McTeer appears as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape, adding to the new ensemble cast.

The trailer offers a first glimpse at how this adaptation will tackle Hogwarts and its famous characters while staying true to the magical world readers know and love. The new series promises a fresh take on the story, with a full season planned to cover each chapter of Harry’s first year at Hogwarts.
HBO Max fans now have something to look forward to this Christmas. The series seems ready to combine nostalgia with a bold new vision, and seeing Lithgow fully suited as Dumbledore is already sparking excitement online.
It looks like this Harry Potter reboot could be a mix of careful homage and new energy. I think Lithgow in full Dumbledore regalia is especially thrilling, he perfectly captures the wizardly presence we expect. What do you think about the new cast and the first full look at Dumbledore?
