Dominic McLaughlin Debuts as Harry Potter in HBO’s Magical New Trailer — First Look Revealed
HBO has released the first trailer for its new Harry Potter series, giving fans a first look at the cast and revealing an earlier premiere date than expected: Christmas 2026.
The series will adapt J.K. Rowling’s first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, reimagining the story for television. Dominic McLaughlin takes on the iconic role of Harry Potter, bringing a fresh take to the character. In the trailer, we see McLaughlin navigating life under the stairs at the Dursleys and experiencing the first magical moments that set him on his journey at Hogwarts.

McLaughlin is joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, who appears sitting at a desk, smiling and showing Hermione’s clever and curious personality. Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley, while the adult cast includes John Lithgow fully dressed as Albus Dumbledore in his robes with his long beard, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, serves as showrunner, and several episodes are directed by Game of Thrones veteran Mark Mylod. HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery are promoting the series as a major event, with CEO JB Perrette calling it “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two and three in many ways.”
The trailer gives fans a full first look at the new Hogwarts and cast, with McLaughlin’s Harry at the center of it all. Original Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe commented on the new casting, saying, “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me. I learned as I went. I look back on what I did now with a lot more kindness… I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.”

Overall, the trailer shows a young, energetic Harry Potter in McLaughlin’s hands, setting the stage for a new vision of the wizarding world. The Christmas 2026 release date promises to make this the holiday streaming event of the year.
Seeing McLaughlin as Harry gives us hope for a bold, exciting retelling of the story. His portrayal in the trailer captures both the humor and courage of the character. I’m curious what fans think, are you excited to see McLaughlin take on the Boy Who Lived? Share your thoughts in the comments.
