Anne Hathaway is navigating the high stakes of her return to the fashion world with a clear sense of purpose. As she prepares for the long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, the 43-year-old actor has taken on a leadership role that extends far beyond her performance.

During a recent conversation with Harper’s Bazaar for her latest cover story, her legendary co-star Meryl Streep revealed that Hathaway was instrumental in ensuring the film’s background talent reflected realistic and healthy physical standards. Streep recounted a specific moment from Milan Fashion Week last year, where the cast attended live shows to film scenes for the upcoming project.

The actress, who famously portrays the formidable Miranda Priestly, noted that she was immediately struck by the physical state of the professional models on the runway. “I was struck by how not only beautiful and young—everyone seems young to me—but alarmingly thin the models were,” Streep explained, adding that she had mistakenly assumed those industry issues had been resolved years ago.

According to the veteran star, Hathaway noticed the same concerning trend and took immediate action behind the scenes. She reportedly approached the film’s producers to insist that the models cast for their fictional runway shows should not appear skeletal.

“She made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal,” Streep shared. She concluded that her co-star is a “stand-up girl” for using her influence to advocate for change.

The interview also touched on Hathaway’s personal journey with aging and the pressures of maintaining a public image in Hollywood. She spoke candidly about the shifting relationship she has with her own reflection as she matures.

“Some days you look in the mirror, and you’re just like, ‘Not bad.’ And some days you look in the mirror, and you’re like, ‘What?’” she admitted with a laugh. She noted that she found peace by letting go of the expectation to look like someone else and simply accepting her body for what it currently is.

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see the results of her advocacy, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 is officially scheduled to hit theaters on May 1. The sequel reunites the original core cast, including Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, while introducing new faces like Kenneth Branagh and Simone Ashley.

The plot follows Miranda Priestly as she navigates the decline of traditional print media, eventually clashing with Emily Charlton, who has become a powerful executive at a rival luxury group. This fashion-focused revival is just one part of a massive year for Hathaway, who has four other theatrical films slated for release this year.

On April 17, she will star in the A24 thriller Mother Mary, appearing alongside Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer. She is also set to lead the science-fiction film Flowervale Street, which features Ewan McGregor and is currently scheduled for an August 14 release. Later in the fall, she will headline the highly anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-seller, Verity.

In addition to her film work, Hathaway has been busy with the early stages of development for The Princess Diaries 3, a project she is also producing. Between her advocacy for healthier industry standards and her prolific output of diverse projects, she is firmly establishing herself as one of the most powerful and conscientious voices in contemporary cinema.
