Laura Dern is set to take the lead in a new limited series based on Julie K. Brown’s book, Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story, sources tell Variety. The show, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries, will dramatize Brown’s groundbreaking reporting that exposed the secret plea deal between Jeffrey Epstein and federal prosecutors.

The series follows Brown’s years-long investigation, which identified 80 victims and persuaded key survivors to speak out on the record. Her reporting ultimately led to the arrests of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the release of millions of Justice Department files detailing Epstein’s sex trafficking and money laundering activities, and major fallout for figures in politics, media, and academia.

“This story needed to be told in full,” one insider explained. “It’s about the tireless work of a reporter who refused to let powerful people hide the truth.”

Sharon Hoffman, known for Mrs. America and House of Cards, is writing the series and will serve as co-showrunner with Eileen Myers (American Hostage, Masters of Sex). Both also executive produce, along with Dern, Brown, McKay, and Kevin Messick.

Dern, whose recent credits include Palm Royale, Tiny Beautiful Things, and Big Little Lies, is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. McKay, whose recent work includes Succession and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, is also represented by CAA. Myers is repped by Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Hyperobject Industries has experience developing investigative projects, having previously worked on Broken: Seeking Justice, which featured Brown and multiple survivors of Epstein’s abuse.

This new series promises to be a powerful retelling of one of the most shocking stories in modern history, centering on the courage of a journalist who refused to stay silent.
