Anne Hathaway is kicking off an exciting 2026 with a big movie lineup, and the first look at her new film Mother Mary has fans buzzing.

Directed by David Lowery, who is known for films like The Green Knight and A Ghost Story, Mother Mary is a surrealistic psychological horror with musical elements. Hathaway plays Mary, a struggling musician who reconnects with an old friend and fashion designer named Sam, played by Emmy winner Michaela Coel.

Their reunion sets the stage for a complicated makeover, both musically and personally. At one point, Mary asks Sam, “Are you making me a hate dress?” hinting at the tension between them. Euphoria star Hunter Schaefer also appears as Sam’s assistant, Hilda, helping manage Mary’s dramatic transformation.

The musical side of Mother Mary is just as intriguing. Hathaway performs ethereal pop songs crafted by FKA Twigs, who also appears in the film, along with Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. The trailer shows Mary singing on stage in front of adoring fans, intercut with haunting, surreal imagery that reflects the film’s themes of identity and reinvention.

Mother Mary is just the first of five films Hathaway is set to appear in between April and October 2026. After this, she will star in The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and Verity. With a mix of genres and roles, Hathaway is proving that this year could be one of her most diverse and high-profile yet.

The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on April 17, with a nationwide release on April 24. With such big musical names involved and Hathaway in the lead, industry insiders are already talking about potential Oscar buzz for Best Original Song, and possibly Best Actress. As Hathaway navigates a year packed with ambitious projects, Mother Mary looks like it could be a major milestone in her career.

It’s exciting to see Hathaway take on such a unique role. Between the musical elements, the psychological twists, and the fashion-driven story, this could be one of her most daring performances yet.
