Lamar Odom has been making headlines again following the premiere of the Netflix documentary Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, which debuted on March 31. The film revisits the former NBA champion’s harrowing 2015 overdose at a Nevada brothel and the long journey to recovery that followed.

While the documentary paints a picture of his estranged wife, Khloé Kardashian, as a tireless advocate who remained by his hospital bed for months, Odom recently offered a different perspective on who deserves the credit for his survival.

In a candid interview on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle on April 6, the athlete appeared to distance himself from the narrative that Kardashian was his primary savior. When asked directly if he felt she was the one who saved his life, the 46-year-old was hesitant to agree completely. “In some ways,” he replied during the broadcast. “God saved my life. My lord saved my life, honestly.”

The hosts pressed further, reminding him that Kardashian had put her own life on hold and remained his legal next of kin despite their pending divorce at the time. Odom acknowledged her physical presence and support but maintained that his survival was more of a spiritual event than a human one.

“Yeah, she took care of me,” he admitted during the segment, “but God took care of me the most. What I came back from is like a medical miracle.” The documentary also revealed a stunning claim from Kardashian regarding Odom’s estranged father, Joe.

She alleged that upon her arrival at the Nevada hospital, Joe was encouraging medical staff to cease life support for his son. She suggested in her confessional that Joe may have been motivated by a potential inheritance, stating, “I assume, [he] thought he’s now the beneficiary to Lamar.

And Joe just said, ‘Don’t put him on life support. Turn those machines off.’” She further claimed that she successfully convinced him to leave the hospital only after giving him a pair of sneakers and a small amount of cash. Odom, however, strongly disputed this version of the story during his morning show appearance.

He noted that he was unconscious during the time in question but argued that such behavior would be completely out of character for his father. “If you know Joe Odom, I don’t think that’s something he would ever come out of his mouth. He was my biggest fan. I don’t know where that got mistranslated,” he said, wearing a memorial necklace for his parents.

While the two famously reunited in February 2025 for an episode of The Kardashians on Hulu, Odom described the meeting as uncomfortable. The reunion, which took place at the home of a mutual friend, saw Kardashian returning various sentimental items she had kept since their 2016 divorce.

Odom reflected on the experience by saying, “It was awkward, and it wasn’t really good for me. But once you’re family, you’re always family, so she ain’t going nowhere.” He clarified that while he still cares for her, he is no longer in love with her.

Outside of his recent media appearances, Odom has been focusing on his health and various business ventures. He also recently completed a voluntary 30-day wellness program
