A new season of Rick and Morty is on the way, and the first trailer is already giving fans a chaotic preview of what’s coming next. Adult Swim has released an early look at season nine, and it leans fully into the show’s usual mix of absurd danger and dark humor.

The new season is set to premiere on May 24 and will include 10 episodes. The trailer shows the Smith family facing yet another strange threat, including a bizarre creature made entirely of couch cushions. In one scene, Beth questions the madness around her, asking, “Why is the furniture attacking us?” as the family tries to survive the attack.

Another moment shifts focus to Rick and Morty, with Rick dragging Morty out of bed for what looks like intense training. He shouts, “Rise and shine, motherfucker! It’s time to train.” The voice cast continues with Ian Cardoni as Rick, Harry Belden as Morty, and Sarah Chalke returning as Beth, along with Chris Parnell and Spencer Grammer.

The trailer also jokes about how long the show has been running. A narrator says, “Anything is possible when everything is possible: 100 years of Rick and Morty continues with a new season.” Rick then adds, “Season nine, baby. Only an indefinite number more.” While that line is clearly exaggerated, the series has already been renewed through season 12.

Season eight brought its own attention, including cameo appearances from James Gunn and Zack Snyder, who both voiced themselves. The show has remained one of the most popular comedies on cable for years, and Adult Swim is continuing to build on that success. A spin-off focused on President Curtis, voiced by Keith David, is also in development.

In a past interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Dan Harmon spoke about the show’s storytelling style. He said, “My part of it is, I’ll just always insist on the modular, one-off thing,” explaining that standalone episodes take more effort but are important to the show’s identity. He also added, “Serialization is a glorious, wonderful thing that happens automatically to a show that people love.”

Season nine looks like it will continue that balance between random adventures and deeper story threads. The trailer suggests bigger stakes, stranger enemies, and the same unpredictable tone that has kept fans watching for years.

The show works best when it stays weird and doesn’t try too hard to explain everything. That mix of chaos and emotion is what made people stick with it this long. What do you think about the new season and the trailer? Share your thoughts in the comments.
