Information reported by People magazine and the Los Angeles Department of Health has confirmed details about the passing of actress Valerie Perrine, who died at the age of 82.

Official records show that her immediate cause of death was acute cardiopulmonary arrest. This condition is commonly known as sudden cardiac arrest. The report also states that Parkinson’s disease was the main underlying illness that led to her death. Dementia was also listed as a contributing factor.

Perrine had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015. She lived with the condition for several years before her passing on March 23.

Her death was first publicly announced by her longtime friend Stacey Souther. He shared a message on social media expressing grief and remembering her life and character. He wrote, “It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away.” He also added, “She faced Parkinson’s disease with incredible courage and compassion, never once complaining. She was a true inspiration who lived life to the fullest — and what a magnificent life it was.” He continued, “The world feels less beautiful without her in it. I love you, Valerie. I’ll see you on the other side.”

Perrine built a long career in film and television. She became widely known after her role in the 1974 film “Lenny,” where she earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance.

She also appeared in the 1978 film “Superman” and returned for the 1980 sequel. In those films, she played the girlfriend of the villain Lex Luthor, which became one of her most recognized roles.

Outside of film, she worked steadily in television. Her credits include appearances in shows such as “ER,” “Nash Bridges,” and a recurring storyline in “As the World Turns.” She also appeared in the 2000 film “What Women Want.”

Her early breakthrough came in the 1972 film “Slaughterhouse-Five,” which helped launch her career in Hollywood.
