Dax Shepard (51) Opens up About Heated Clash With Eric Dane Outside AA Meeting
Dax Shepard reflected on a surprisingly rocky start to his friendship with the late Eric Dane, revealing that the two actors were once on the brink of a physical altercation. During a candid conversation with CNN, Shepard admitted that his initial impression of the Grey’s Anatomy star was far from positive when they first crossed paths in a recovery program.
According to Shepard, a long-simmering tension peaked when he felt Dane was acting like a bully toward a younger member of their group. The disagreement became so heated that Shepard eventually challenged Dane to settle things in the driveway of their meeting location.
“Eric Dane, I can now say I met in recovery, and we hated each other. I hated him!” Shepard recalled, describing how they both walked outside prepared for a fistfight. Fortunately, the violence never materialized, and the two men continued to attend the same meetings for the next two years, eventually finding common ground through their shared histories.
As they both continued their journeys in sobriety, Shepard began to see past the defensive exterior that had initially bothered him. He learned about Dane’s childhood trauma, including the tragic loss of his father, which mirrored Shepard’s own experience of growing up without a paternal figure.
“I came to fall in love with a very scared man trying and hoping he had become a man, and I related,” Shepard explained, noting that they eventually became close enough to discuss their troubled upbringings at Dane’s home.
Eric Dane passed away in February at the age of 53 following a courageous battle with ALS, a diagnosis he had gone public with the previous year. Before his death, he remained active in the industry, completing work on the third season of Euphoria.
Fans can look forward to hearing more of his story in his posthumous memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, which is scheduled for release later this year. Dax Shepard has also remained a central figure in the entertainment landscape, primarily through the continued success of his podcast, Armchair Expert.
The show recently received its first Golden Globe nomination for Best Podcast, a testament to its massive growth since securing a major distribution deal with Wondery. As the industry continues to mourn the loss of the man known to many as “McSteamy,” the stories shared by his peers highlight a legacy of resilience and vulnerability.
