‘Avengers: Doomsday’ took over the conversation at CinemaCon, and a surprise moment between Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. is what really got people talking.

During the presentation, Evans walked on stage alongside Downey, Kevin Feige, and the Russo Brothers. He greeted Downey with “Hey pal!”, which instantly got a reaction from the crowd. The two actors then leaned in like they were about to hug, but stopped halfway. It was clearly planned, and it worked as a simple way to hint at tension between their characters.

According to coverage from CinemaCon, that short moment became the biggest highlight of the event. It played on their long history in the MCU while also teasing something new. Evans is returning as Steve Rogers, while Downey is now playing Doctor Doom, putting them on opposite sides of the story.

The film is set to release on December 18, and it’s being positioned as a major turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, which is planned for 2027. The story focuses on multiple universes colliding, bringing together different teams and characters.

The movie is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with writing by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. It’s produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This will be the follow-up to Avengers: Endgame and marks the 39th film in the MCU.

The cast is huge, bringing together characters from across the franchise and even from the older X-Men films. The story itself takes place after the events of Thunderbolts*. It follows the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and others as they come together to face Doctor Doom.

The project has gone through some big changes behind the scenes. Originally, Marvel planned to end this phase with a different storyline centered on Kang the Conqueror. But after legal issues involving Jonathan Majors, the studio shifted direction. Majors was removed, and the story was reworked. The Russo Brothers returned, and Downey’s casting as Doctor Doom was announced in 2024 along with the new title.

Filming started in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England and wrapped in September, with additional scenes shot in Bahrain.

All of this build-up, combined with moments like the one at CinemaCon, is clearly meant to set the tone. The message is simple: familiar faces are back, but things won’t play out the way fans expect this time.
