The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to arrive on digital platforms on May 5, according to a report from When to Stream. The release would come just about a month after the film first opened in theaters on April 1. Universal Pictures has not officially confirmed the date yet, so it may still change.

The movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and continues the franchise that began with The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. The returning voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser.

The story takes inspiration from Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy game from 2007. In this version, Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, becomes a central threat after kidnapping Princess Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson. Rosalina is also revealed to be connected to Peach as her long-lost sister.

The plot follows Peach and Toad as they set out on a mission across space to rescue Rosalina. Mario and Luigi soon join them, along with Yoshi, who is voiced by Donald Glover. The journey takes the characters through a galaxy-based adventure built around new worlds and challenges.

The report says the film will be released on premium video on demand for $24.99. Rental pricing is expected to be around $19.99 for a 48-hour viewing period. It should be available on platforms such as Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube, and Fandango at Home.

Even though the digital release is coming quickly, the film has been a major success in cinemas. Reports cited from The Numbers show it has earned over $831 million worldwide against a production budget of around $110 million.

Universal has been adjusting how quickly its films move from theaters to streaming. The studio now generally waits at least five weekends before releasing movies on digital platforms. This is part of a new strategy meant to balance box office performance with home viewing demand.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still playing in theaters, but if the report is correct, it will soon be available for home viewing in early May.
