When Warner Bros. released the rebooted ‘Mortal Kombat‘ back in 2021, the studio was betting that the iconic fighting game franchise could finally find its footing on the big screen. The film landed during the early reopening of theaters after the COVID pandemic, earning a simultaneous streaming release and proving a modest hit with genre fans despite a 55% rating from critics. It was enough of a commercial showing to greenlight a follow-up, and five years later, that sequel is finally here.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ is directed by returning filmmaker Simon McQuoid from a script by Jeremy Slater, with Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle joining a returning ensemble that includes Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Chin Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The most anticipated addition to the roster is Urban as Johnny Cage, the cocky action movie star whose absence from the 2021 original was deliberate. McQuoid explained at the time that the character was a “giant personality” who would throw the first film out of balance.

Now that the embargo has lifted ahead of the film’s theatrical release, critics have rendered their verdict, and it is a genuine milestone for the franchise. Based on 80 reviews, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ holds a solid 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of writing), officially making it the highest-rated live-action installment in the video game franchise. That figure carries more weight than it might initially appear when placed against the full history of the series on screen.

This marks the first time in the live-action franchise’s history that a ‘Mortal Kombat’ film has been granted a Certified Fresh score, as previous live-action adaptations, including the cult classic 1995 version and the 2021 reboot, all received Rotten Tomatometer ratings from critics. The animated corner of the franchise had long held the critical edge, with 2020’s ‘Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge’ sitting at an impressive 90%, but the live-action side of things has now finally earned its fresh rating.

The reviews landing around that score suggest a film that delivers exactly what fans came for while acknowledging its storytelling limitations. MovieWeb awarded the film 3.5 out of 5, praising Urban as an inspired choice who shoulders the acting burden while returning director McQuoid provides “red meat to loyal legions without any attempt to stray from the fantastic source material.” Critics who were less enthusiastic still largely acknowledged the sequel as a clear step up from its predecessor, with praise centering on the fight choreography and Urban’s comedic energy as Cage.

Box office projections indicate that ‘Mortal Kombat II’ could have a 40 to 45 million dollar opening weekend, which would be enough to top the competition and edge out the No. 1 spot. The film was originally slated for October 2025 before Warner Bros. moved it to the summer to maximize its commercial performance, a decision that now looks well-founded. Screenwriter Greg Russo, who co-wrote the 2021 film, has described the reboot as a planned trilogy, with the first film set before the tournament, the second during it, and the third after.

With a fresh score secured, a strong cast, and a third film already in development, the franchise has never looked healthier heading into a summer release. Whether you are a lifelong fan of the games or someone coming in fresh through Urban’s casting, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ is shaping up to be the definitive cinematic argument for why this universe belongs on the biggest screen possible.

If you are heading to theaters this weekend, share your thoughts afterward on whether Johnny Cage was worth the five-year wait.
