Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Reboot Lands a Star-Studded Guest Cast Including Steve Buscemi and Oscar Winner Amy Madigan

Few television revivals have generated as much anticipation as Hulu’s upcoming reimagining of ‘The X-Files.’ The beloved paranormal procedural first captivated audiences in the 1990s on Fox, building a devoted following around its mythology-laden storytelling and the undeniable chemistry of its two leads. That legacy carries enormous weight, and the creative team behind this new chapter seems well aware of the standard being set.

At the helm is Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind ‘Sinners,’ who is both writing and directing the pilot for Hulu. Coogler, who just won an original screenplay Oscar for ‘Sinners,’ serves as an executive producer on the Onyx Collective Studio and 20th Television production, with original ‘X-Files’ creator Chris Carter also returning as an executive producer. Jennifer Yale, known for her work on ‘The Copenhagen Test,’ is on board as showrunner.

Eight guest roles have now been filled, with recent ‘Weapons’ best supporting actress Oscar winner Amy Madigan leading the charge alongside Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton. The group joins a production that has been steadily building momentum since Hulu first ordered the pilot.

Madigan’s casting is particularly resonant, given that her awards-season triumph in ‘Weapons’ was a horror achievement that shares the same cultural moment as Coogler’s own ‘Sinners.’ Her previous screen credits span decades and include ‘Field of Dreams,’ ‘Uncle Buck,’ ‘Carnivale,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ and ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.’ Buscemi, whose career ranges from ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘The Big Lebowski’ to ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ brings his own formidable screen presence to the mix.

The series leads are Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler, who play two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. The pairing also marks a minor ‘Station Eleven’ reunion between the two actors.

The original ‘X-Files’ boasted an impressive roster of guest talent across its run, including Garry Shandling, Ed Asner, Brad Dourif, Lucy Liu, Bruce Campbell, and Michael Emerson, setting a precedent that this new cast is clearly aiming to honor. The pilot is scheduled to film in May and June 2026 in Vancouver, British Columbia, with no premiere date yet announced.

A door has been left open for original leads Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny to participate in the show as well, a prospect that would send longtime fans of the series into orbit. After completing ‘The X-Files,’ Coogler is expected to move on to ‘Black Panther 3,’ rumored for a summer 2028 release. With this caliber of talent assembling around a project already carrying serious Oscar-winning energy, the big question now is whether the truth really is out there, and whether Coogler is the one who can find it.

Are you convinced this is the ‘X-Files’ revival that finally gets it right, or does the absence of Mulder and Scully at the center still feel like too large a void to fill?
