The ‘Legally Blonde’ Story Finally Gets Its High School Chapter in Prime Video’s ‘Elle’ Trailer

For more than two decades, Elle Woods charging into Harvard Law School with an unstoppable smile and an all-pink wardrobe has remained one of pop culture’s most enduring character entrances. ‘Legally Blonde’ followed a perky, pink-clad undergrad who decides to pursue a law degree to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to discover her own remarkable intelligence along the way. The success of the original film even extended to a Broadway production titled ‘Legally Blonde: The Musical’, cementing Elle Woods as a genuine cultural fixture.

Prime Video’s new series ‘Elle’ serves as a prequel to ‘Legally Blonde’, tracing the teenage years of the iconic character and exploring the experiences that shaped her into the confident, ambitious young woman audiences came to know in the original films. Filming began in April 2025, with the streamer revealing the first official look at newcomer Lexi Minetree donning a bright pink hoodie and lying on bright pink bedsheets, showing an almost uncanny resemblance to Witherspoon’s grown-up take on the character. Anticipation for the show has been quietly and steadily building ever since.

The full scope of what Prime Video has been building is now in clear view. The streamer unveiled a new trailer for ‘Elle’ that offers a far richer look at the prequel’s world, with No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” playing as backdrop to Elle’s difficult first days at a Seattle high school. That song choice alone does a great deal of tonal work, rooting the series firmly and deliberately in the mid-nineties.

The trailer opens with Minetree’s Elle at a lavish birthday party in Bel-Air in 1995, before everything changes when her parents announce the family is relocating to Seattle for her father’s job. Arriving at her new school in her trademark pink, Elle is met with immediate skepticism from flannel-wearing classmates, with one telling her outright that she looks like an idiot. The series, which drops all eight episodes on July 1, follows Elle through tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and questionable fashion choices as she works out who she is meant to become.

Minetree steps into the lead role in her first major starring performance, with June Diane Raphael playing Elle’s mother and Tom Everett Scott as her father, alongside a cast that includes Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zac Looker. The series was created by Laura Kittrell and is co-showrun alongside Caroline Dries, with Jason Moore directing the first two episodes.

Witherspoon, who played Elle Woods in the original films and serves as executive producer here, has made no secret of how much the project means to her. In a statement published by Amazon, she said that discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of her career, and that the series’ themes of kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself will resonate with fans of the original films and new audiences alike.

Prime Video has already renewed ‘Elle’ for a second season ahead of the Season 1 premiere, with production on the follow-up set to begin in the spring. The July 1 release also coincides with the 25th anniversary of ‘Legally Blonde’, making the timing feel entirely intentional. The bigger question heading into premiere day is whether Lexi Minetree has what it takes to step out of Reese Witherspoon’s shadow entirely. After watching the trailer, do you think she has already earned that pink crown?
