‘Dead City’ Season 3 Cast Revealed: Jimmi Simpson’s New Character May Be Negan’s Most Unsettling Mirror Yet
Few spinoffs in the sprawling Walking Dead universe have managed to hold fan attention the way ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘ has since its debut. Built around one of the franchise’s most complicated relationships, the series has consistently leaned into the push and pull between two survivors who should never have ended up on the same side. With a new season approaching, AMC has now confirmed the full starring lineup for the show’s third chapter, and the names attached suggest a significant escalation.
‘Dead City’ Season 3 is set to arrive on July 26, 2026, with AMC positioning the new chapter around a major shift for its central duo. According to the official synopsis, Maggie and Negan will attempt to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, placing longtime enemies on the same side in a way the series has never quite explored before. The third season also marks the first under a new showrunner, with Seth Hoffman taking the reins after Eli Jorné, the man who built the spinoff and ran its first two seasons, departed the series.
According to an AMC press release, the starring cast for Season 3 consists of Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jimmi Simpson, Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Logan Kim, and Michael Emery. Three of those names represent significant new additions to Manhattan’s post-apocalyptic landscape, and each one appears to carry real narrative weight. Aimee Garcia, known for her work on ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Dexter’, has been set as a series regular playing Renata, a disarmingly charming leader with a natural ability to win people over through her optimism and personality. Raúl Castillo, previously seen in ‘Army of the Dead’, joins as Luis, a doctor whose storyline becomes closely tied to Hershel.
The addition generating the most buzz, though, is Jimmi Simpson. Showrunner Seth Hoffman described Simpson’s character Dillard as a psychological counterweight to Negan, explaining that Dillard is someone who found a way to survive alone, but at a serious psychological cost. Hoffman noted that Renata functions as a flip side to Maggie, while Dillard is a flip side to Negan, with Negan entering the season at a crossroads where he feels people are terrible and wants to go it alone. A first look at the dynamic between the two characters was unveiled at IGN Live 2026, with Negan meeting Dillard at a bar that is completely empty except for a couple of conveniently placed walkers Dillard appears to have domesticated.
Lauren Cohan herself offered perhaps the strongest endorsement of the new character, calling Dillard a revelation and naming him one of her favorite characters across all of ‘The Walking Dead’, full stop. That kind of praise from someone who has lived inside this franchise for over a decade is not nothing, and it positions Simpson’s role as something more than a seasonal antagonist.
Production on Season 3 began September 8, 2025 in Brockton, Massachusetts, with additional setups in Boston and Worcester, and the episode count is set at eight. That tighter, more focused order, combined with a compelling new cast and a showrunner with deep roots in the original series, suggests ‘Dead City’ is heading into its third year with real confidence.
Whether the Maggie and Negan alliance can survive Manhattan’s chaos, and whether Dillard ends up being a warning Negan actually heeds, is the question worth arguing about until July 26 arrives.
