Vince Gilligan Is Already Falling in Love With ‘Pluribus’ Season 2 as Writing Hits a Major Milestone

When ‘Pluribus’ arrived on Apple TV+ in late 2025, very few could have predicted the sheer scale of its cultural impact. The sci-fi drama from the creative mind behind ‘Breaking Bad’ quickly became a phenomenon that transcended its genre, earning devoted fans and widespread critical praise in equal measure.

The show centers on Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehorn, a woman who must confront an alien force that has turned the rest of humanity into a literal hive mind. Its debut season broke Apple TV+’s all-time viewership record, surpassing even ‘Severance’, and Seehorn took home the Golden Globe for Best Female Actor in a Television Series Drama for her portrayal of Carol. Needless to say, the appetite for what comes next has been enormous.

Now, the creator himself is offering the most encouraging update yet. Speaking with Deadline, Gilligan confirmed that his writing team is now past the halfway point on Season 2, describing the moment as one where the hard early slog has finally given way to genuine excitement. It is the kind of progress report that restless fans of the show have been waiting months to hear.

Reflecting on the process, Gilligan noted that every season of every show starts out hard, but that staying with it long enough eventually shifts the energy entirely. He added that he is now at the point where he is genuinely looking forward to shooting the new episodes and to audiences seeing them, describing it simply as something he is digging. That personal enthusiasm from a creator of his calibre is, by itself, a meaningful signal about where the season is headed.

A feature from The Hollywood Reporter offered additional texture around the update, noting that while full scripts are not yet written, Gilligan’s outlines are typically so thorough they contain almost everything but dialogue, making this halfway point a more substantive milestone than it might initially appear. Executive producer Gordon Smith had previously told Variety that the team hopes to return to physical production sometime by the end of this year or in early 2027.

Gilligan has been candid that ‘Pluribus’ will not follow an annual release schedule, noting the show’s ambition takes time, and that the wait will frustrate some fans, though he has made no apologies for prioritizing quality over speed. He has also been open about the fact that even the show’s eventual ending is not fully locked in, saying that if a better idea emerges in the writers’ room, he is willing to abandon earlier plans in favor of something stronger.

Apple TV+ originally greenlit ‘Pluribus’ as a two-season order back in 2022, meaning Season 2 has always been part of the plan, though the writers are approaching it fresh rather than relying on anything prepared in advance. With writing momentum now clearly on their side and Gilligan’s own enthusiasm publicly confirmed, the second chapter of Carol Sturka’s story feels closer than it has at any point since the Season 1 finale aired.

Whether you are still processing that explosive ending or have simply been counting the days since, this feels like the right moment to share what you most want from Carol’s next chapter in the comments.
