The holiday season just got a very early gift for fans of a certain furry green menace. More than two decades after one of the most beloved Christmas films of the modern era first arrived in theaters, its central character is officially being dusted off for a brand-new chapter. The franchise that began with Dr. Seuss’ timeless tale of a holiday-hating hermit is making its long-awaited live-action return, and it is bringing back the key creative forces that made the original so memorable.

‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ directed by Ron Howard and based on the 1957 children’s book by Dr. Seuss, follows the misanthropic green creature who resides on Mount Crumpit and sets out to sabotage the joyful holiday for the residents of Whoville. Released just ahead of Thanksgiving in 2000, the film was the top movie of the year domestically, earning a total of over $345 million worldwide. It also took home the Oscar for Best Makeup for Rick Baker and Gail Rowell-Ryan, who transformed Carrey for the role. Despite a mixed critical reception at launch, the film has since cemented itself as an annual Christmas tradition for families around the world.

Now, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to the original film is officially in development, with Jim Carrey in talks to reprise his role as the Grinch, and Ron Howard returning to direct and produce alongside his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer. The untitled sequel will be scripted by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, the trio of writers behind ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ who also previously collaborated on another Dr. Seuss live-action adaptation, ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ starring Mike Myers.

The return of Carrey to the role is particularly notable given just how punishing the original production was for the actor. In an interview with Vulture, Carrey revealed that the first day of makeup took eight hours, and he nearly quit the film entirely, suffering from panic attacks after wearing painful green contacts and a full body suit made of itchy yak hair. The situation became so dire that producer Brian Grazer ultimately brought in a SEAL Team Six founder who trained CIA operatives to help Carrey mentally endure the experience.

Carrey has since wound down his acting career, though he became a box office force once more playing Dr. Ivo Robotnik in Paramount’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films, and is set to reprise that role in the series’ fourth installment due out in April 2027. ComicBook previously spoke to Carrey ahead of the release of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3,’ and when asked which character he would most like to return to, the actor brought up the Grinch without any additional prompt. Clearly, the green guy has never fully left his mind.

Carrey has previously said he would be open to returning as the Grinch, though he noted that the intensive makeup process from the original film was off-putting and that he would want to use motion capture technology instead. Whether that updated approach makes it into the sequel remains to be seen, but it could be a key factor in what convinced him to seriously consider coming back. The 2018 animated ‘Grinch’ reboot from Illumination featured Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, but that version exists in a separate universe entirely from the Howard and Carrey original.

On the studio side, CEO Susan Brandt will oversee the project for Dr. Seuss Enterprises, with Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development Britt Hennemuth and Creative Executive Christina Hoffrogge also attached. All of that suggests a project that has serious institutional support behind it, not merely a casual announcement. The big question now circling fan conversations is what story the sequel will actually tell, given the original ended on a note of genuine resolution and holiday warmth.

With a writing team known for sharp, character-driven comedy and a director-star reunion that audiences have been quietly hoping for, the pieces are in place for something special. Now that the news is out, what do you think the Grinch’s next chapter should look like, and should Whoville’s Cindy Lou Who be back at the center of it all?
