Will There Be a ‘Toy Story 6’? Inside Pixar’s Hints About the Franchise’s Future

‘Toy Story’ has spent more than three decades convincing audiences that toys have feelings, and somehow it keeps working. The franchise that began in 1995 has grown into one of Pixar’s most reliable tentpoles, with each new chapter drawing multigenerational crowds back into theaters.

That pull was on full display this past weekend. Since the original film arrived in 1995, every new chapter has functioned as something larger than a movie, drawing families together with a blend of nostalgia and genuine emotional weight that few properties in Hollywood can reliably replicate. With seven years having passed since ‘Toy Story 4,’ anticipation for the newest entry had been building for months.

Where ‘Toy Story 6’ Stands Right Now

That newest entry, ‘Toy Story 5,’ arrived in theaters on June 19 and immediately raised the obvious question fans always ask after a strong outing, will there be a ‘Toy Story 6.’ The honest answer right now is that nothing has been confirmed. There is no release date, no plot details, and no announcement that another sequel is being developed. Disney and Pixar have not yet greenlit another movie, so fans do not know for sure if ‘Toy Story 6’ is happening.

What gives the rumor mill something to chew on is a comment from director Andrew Stanton, who has now steered four Pixar films including ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘WALL-E.’ Speaking to ScreenRant, Stanton addressed the possibility of another sequel and left the door open, saying “You can never say never.”

Yes, ‘Toy Story 5’ Has a Post-Credits Scene, and Fans Have Big Opinions About It

That single line is doing a lot of heavy lifting online, but it is worth keeping in perspective. Stanton’s comments should be seen as a sign that more stories are possible, not as proof that another movie is on the way. Still, they show that Pixar has not completely closed the door on Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the ‘Toy Story’ world.

The Box Office Case for a Sequel

Whether ‘Toy Story 6’ ever gets greenlit will likely come down to numbers, and ‘Toy Story 5’ is putting up very good ones. The film opened with a 94% Certified Fresh critical rating, with the Rotten Tomatoes audience score sitting at a healthy 93%, suggesting strong alignment between critics and general audiences. It also posted the best Thursday preview box office total ever for a ‘Toy Story’ film and the best for any film in 2026 with 17.5 million dollars grossed, putting it on pace for a franchise-record opening weekend.

Industry pattern also offers a clue about timing if a sixth film does move forward. Toy Story 3 came out in 2010, followed by Toy Story 4 in 2019, a nine-year gap, then Toy Story 5 in 2026, a seven-year gap, suggesting Pixar maintains a deliberate pace between installments. Pixar typically operates on a production cycle of four to five years from initial concept to final release, which would place the earliest realistic window for a sixth film in late 2029 or 2030.

For now, the future of Woody and Buzz remains an open question rather than a confirmed plan, and Stanton’s careful optimism is the closest thing fans have to an answer. With ‘Toy Story 5’ just landing in theaters and already breaking franchise records, do you think the strong reception is enough to convince Pixar to bring the gang back one more time for ‘Toy Story 6’?
