The Pogues have never had it easy, but ‘Outer Banks’ Season 4 pushed the gang through some of its darkest territory yet. What started as another treasure hunt for the crew quickly spiraled into a story about identity, betrayal, and loss, leaving fans across social media still processing the fallout months after the finale dropped.

Split into two parts, the season followed John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo as they chased the legend of the Blue Crown, a relic said to grant its holder’s greatest wish. For the teenagers, the treasure represented more than wealth, symbolizing hope, stability, and a potential escape from their turbulent lives. That search eventually carried the group all the way to Morocco for a final, high-stakes showdown.

JJ’s Tragic Family Secret

The emotional core of the season centered on JJ, whose entire world unraveled after a stunning revelation. He discovered he was actually born a Kook and that his father was not who he had always believed. That truth tied directly to the season’s central villain, Chandler Groff, who turned out to be JJ’s biological father hiding behind a mask of respectability.

JJ’s unraveling led to him wreaking havoc on the town, which temporarily shut down most local businesses, and the chaos pushed the Pogues further down the path toward Morocco. Along the way, JJ was framed for murder and ended up setting the city on fire before the group finally tracked down the Blue Crown. It was a brutal arc, but one that gave the character real weight heading into the finale.

The Blue Crown Finale and JJ’s Sacrifice

The season’s climax delivered one of the most devastating moments in the show’s history. After JJ reached the top of the ancient sculpture and pulled out the Blue Crown, Dalia took aim to shoot him, forcing JJ and Kiara to flee, only for the pair to get separated as they scrambled back down from the ruins.

Kiara ran straight into Groff, who had clawed his way free earlier in the episode. With a knife to Kiara’s throat, Groff demanded the crown, and JJ handed it over without hesitation, telling his father there were more important things in life than treasure. That sacrifice ultimately cost JJ his life, marking the first time the Pogues lost one of their own for good.

Before he died, JJ shared a final, gutting moment with Kiara. He told her he had already gotten everything he wanted, asking her to take care of the others before saying he loved her. Beyond JJ’s death, the season also delivered a major twist for John B and Sarah, as the finale revealed Sarah’s pregnancy, a development that instantly reshaped John B’s priorities and pulled him toward a safer, more settled life for his growing family.

Chandler Groff cemented himself as one of the show’s most ruthless antagonists along the way. He was responsible for the deaths of Hollis Robinson, Wes Genrette, and ultimately his own son, JJ, proving he cared about nothing beyond himself and his fortune. Fans worried about lingering questions were given some reassurance, since Netflix renewed ‘Outer Banks’ for a fifth and final season before the current run even wrapped.

With JJ’s fate left open and the Blue Crown’s legend still unresolved, Season 5 has a lot riding on it. How do you think the Pogues will move forward without JJ by their side?
