The MCU’s Most Dangerous New Crime Boss Just Got a Face in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Few corners of Spider-Man’s world feel more grounded and genuinely threatening than New York’s criminal underworld, and Marvel Studios seems to know exactly how to tap that energy for its upcoming blockbuster. With Peter Parker now living as a ghost in his own city, erased from the memories of everyone he loves after the events of ‘No Way Home’, the stage is perfectly set for a villain who operates entirely in the shadows of the streets he once protected.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, is set to swing into theaters on July 31, 2026. The film has been building its villain roster steadily for months, teasing a rogues’ gallery that includes Scorpion, Boomerang, Tarantula, and the Hand, making it one of the most villain-packed entries in the entire MCU Spider-Man run.

Now the internet is buzzing after @CultureCrave shared the clearest look yet at one of the film’s most anticipated new threats. During a New York City pop-up tied to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ upcoming film, contributor Chris Gallardo of Nerdtropolis captured the first real glimpse of Marvin Jones III as Tombstone, presented through what appears to be a crime-tracking bulletin board belonging to Peter Parker himself, pinned with newspaper clippings, maps, and suspect photos. The bulletin board features Daily Bugle newspaper clips showing the film’s villains and detailing Spider-Man’s heroic escapades, placing Tombstone squarely at the center of Peter’s investigation.

Jones was originally cast in the role back in September 2025, with Deadline exclusively reporting that the actor had been tapped to play Lonnie Lincoln, one of New York’s nastiest crime bosses, described in the comics as a hulking African-American albino with filed teeth and near-indestructible skin. Jones previously voiced the character in 2018’s animated ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, making his transition to live-action one of the more exciting crossover moments for Marvel fans this year. The casting has been widely celebrated, with one fan quoted by ComicBook.com saying, “Love Tombstone. Love this casting, although I’m not sure there’s anyone else on this planet who could play this character. This is his role.”

Tombstone’s involvement in ‘Brand New Day’ marks the first time a Marvel villain appears three times in 2026, as Jones is also confirmed to show up in ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Season 2 on Disney+, and already appeared in ‘Spider-Noir’ on Prime Video. In the comics, Lonnie Lincoln is a gangster exposed to a gas developed by Doc Ock, which grants him indestructible skin and super strength, using these abilities to run New York City’s criminal underworld under the Tombstone name.

Many fans and analysts are already speculating that Tombstone is the man bankrolling the other villains, orchestrating chaos behind the scenes to make Spider-Man’s life difficult across every level of the city. Best known for his electrifying turn as supervillain Tobias Whale in ‘Black Lightning’, Jones brings both the physical presence and the dramatic gravitas the role demands. With Tom Holland’s Peter Parker stripped of his support system and fighting crime in a city that no longer knows his name, going up against a calculating mob boss of Tombstone’s caliber feels like exactly the kind of earned, street-level threat this new chapter deserves.

Whether Tombstone turns out to be the shadowy mastermind pulling all the strings or a powerful piece of a much larger puzzle, one thing is certain: this first real look has only deepened the anticipation for what could be the MCU’s most grounded Spider-Man film yet. Do you think Tombstone has what it takes to be the true big bad of ‘Brand New Day’, or is he just the opening act for something even darker?
