‘Dutton Ranch’ Episode 8 Puts Carter’s Future in Question While 10 Petal Ranch’s Darkest Secret Finally Comes to Light
Few television series have built tension as methodically as ‘Dutton Ranch’ has across its debut season on Paramount+. With the penultimate episode now streaming, the show has arrived at its most consequential hour yet, one that forces nearly every major character to make choices they cannot take back.
Episode 8, titled “Whiskey Limits,” dropped on June 26 and wasted no time tearing the roof off everything viewers thought they knew about the Jackson family. The result is an hour that does not fully belong to any single storyline, yet manages to serve all of them in ways that feel earned rather than rushed.
Carter’s Spiral Reaches Its Breaking Point
The episode turns the tables on Carter after his drunken antics at the 10 Petal anniversary party, which left Beulah collapsed on the floor in the closing moments of episode seven. Despite being hungover, Rip makes good on his promise to take Carter to work at 10 Petal to get some experience. What follows is less a redemption arc than a portrait of a young man unable to get out of his own way.
Azul and the other ranchers immediately begin ribbing Carter for how much he had to drink, which takes a sour turn when Carter is thrown off his horse while trying to lasso an escaped cow. Rip scolds Carter for snapping at Azul, with Carter swearing and storming off in a huff. Rip finds him in a cattle barn, telling him that if any other rancher had ridden away from him, they would be fired on the spot.
Carter reveals to Beth that he dropped out of school, adding that Rip did not finish his own education. Beth makes it clear that Carter and Rip are very different people, telling him that when you are given a chance to make your life better, you grab it. It is a quiet, stinging exchange that captures the impossibility of their dynamic better than any of the season’s louder confrontations.
Actor Finn Little explained to TVLine that the root of Carter’s behavior comes down to three compounding events: the move from Montana to Texas, which Carter had no say in; the shooting of Dwight, one of Carter’s only friends; and Oreana publicly exposing him at the party. By the end of the episode, Carter has reached out to Sheriff Wade at Dwight’s old hangout, declaring that he wants a job with him at the Sheriff’s office, to which Wade replies that Carter is deeply unqualified.
The 10 Petal Ranch Illegal Operation Exposed
The part most worth discussing in episode 8 arrives in the final ten minutes. Ranch hand Austin Lewis, who has long been suspicious of what happened to coworkers Wes and Chet, gains Zachariah and Rip’s trust and reveals what is really happening with the Jacksons. “They ain’t ranchers, they’re thieves,” he says. It is a confession that reframes the entire season.
The reason the Jacksons survived when the drought destroyed almost every other ranch in South Texas in 2010 was that they have some very dirty business going on. The family has an illicit cattle operation in Mexico, and they steal cattle to smuggle them into the United States with none of the usual disease checks, because all of the paperwork is forged. The implication that this operation may also be responsible for the foot-and-mouth disease that decimated Dutton Ranch’s herd adds a layer of personal stakes for Beth and Rip.
Beth and Rip are caught in the middle, considering their investment in 10 Petal. Rob-Will tells Beulah that he wants to fire Beth and Rip, to which Beulah refuses, responding that they are the “assets” that the ranch needs. The power dynamic inside 10 Petal is now as volatile as anything the show has produced.
Joaquin’s Phone Call and What It Means for the Finale
While the majority of episode 8 centers on Carter struggling with his hangover and throwing tantrums, the ending brings in massive revelations that confirm the belief that 10 Petal Ranch is involved in illegal activities. For a moment it seemed like Beulah’s adopted son Joaquin would forget how his mother betrayed him and chose her blood son Rob-Will over him, but Joaquin was not in the mood to simply move on.
With no other option, Joaquin turns to someone who can help him take Rob-Will out of the picture: his father. His message when he calls hints that he is sending Mariano to deal with Rob-Will directly, telling him “Necesito tu ayuda,” which translates to “I need your help.” It is the kind of moment the season has been quietly building toward since Joaquin’s family ties were first introduced.
Actor Juan Pablo Raba described the weight of the moment, explaining that Joaquin knows the call will change everyone’s life, comparing it to pressing a nuke where you know everything is going to end but you do not see any other way out.
A Record-Breaking Series Heads Into Its Finale
‘Dutton Ranch’ was renewed for a second season ahead of its finale, having amassed 12.9 million viewers globally in the seven days following its premiere, marking the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history. The series also delivered 2.9 million total viewers during its two-episode debut on Paramount Network on May 15, making it the biggest cable series premiere since 2023.
The series has been far better received than the other recent Yellowstone spinoff, ‘Marshals’, with an 89% critics’ score and 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with consistently high episode ratings on IMDb, ranging from 7.9 to 8.5 out of 10 across its first seven episodes.

It is baffling to think that the series only has one episode left before wrapping up its successful debut year, yet “Whiskey Limits” manages to feel both conclusive and explosive at the same time. With the season finale locked in for July 3, Beth and Rip are standing on ground that just shifted completely beneath their boots. With Mariano Reyes now presumably en route and the Jackson empire’s criminal foundation fully exposed, the question heading into next week is not whether the finale will deliver, but who will still be standing when it does. If you have a prediction for how Carter, Joaquin, Beth, and Rip each make it out of Rio Paloma, share it in the comments.
