Mystique’s First Look in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Has Fans Split Right Down the Middle

The road back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the original ‘X-Men’ cast has been building for years, ever since Robert Downey Jr’s surprise reveal as Doctor Doom reshaped the direction of the franchise. Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique has long been rumored to be part of that reunion, joining a growing roster of Fox era mutants making the jump into the MCU fold. That anticipation reached a new peak this week as fresh footage finally gave fans a proper look at her comeback.

‘Avengers Doomsday’ is set to arrive in theaters on December 18, and the film’s marketing machine has been ramping up steadily ahead of that date. A livestream stunt in March 2025 confirmed the cast, which includes Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops and Kelsey Grammer as Beast, all reprising their roles from the Fox Marvel movies.

The account DiscussingFilm shared a striking image from the new footage showing Mystique in her signature blue and scaled form, complete with a shorter red wig and a skull like headpiece across her forehead. That post quickly spread across social media as fans dissected every detail of the shapeshifter’s updated appearance. Some of the trailer shots show Mystique suited up in a white X-Men costume paired with that new shorter red hairstyle, and not every fan has warmed to the redesign.

One widely shared clip shows Mystique catching Yelena Belova’s baton and shifting her appearance into that of the New Avengers leader, a moment that has become one of the most talked about beats from the new footage. Reactions to the wig itself have been especially harsh online, with some viewers arguing the styling does not do the character justice compared to her classic slicked back look from the original trilogy. Others have pushed back, insisting the newer footage looks far better than the leaked images that circulated months earlier.

Beyond the hair debate, this version of Mystique appears to be leaning further into her comic book roots than any previous film outing. The visible skull headpiece across her forehead marks the first time the character has sported that classic comic accurate detail on the big screen. It is a small but meaningful shift for longtime readers who have waited to see Mystique’s design pulled more directly from the source material rather than the streamlined look Fox’s films favored.

Mystique’s return is just one piece of a massive ensemble that blends three separate corners of the Marvel multiverse into a single story. The ‘Fantastic Four First Steps’ cast of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss Bachrach are joining alongside Anthony Mackie’s Captain America and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, among many others. The film is being directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, the filmmaking duo behind ‘Avengers Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers Endgame’, and it is expected to set up the following film ‘Avengers Secret Wars.’

With the wig discourse showing no signs of slowing down and Comic Con panels still ahead, Mystique’s rocky reintroduction has already become one of the more divisive talking points of the entire rollout. Do you think this new comic accurate take on Mystique earns its place among the film’s returning X-Men, or should Marvel have kept her closer to the look fans fell in love with decades ago.
