Marvel Just Found Its New Professor X, and Fans Have Feelings About It
The ‘X-Men’ reboot has been one of the most anticipated projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Disney absorbed 20th Century Fox back in 2019, and speculation about who would lead the new mutant team has only intensified in recent months. The X-Men universe was by far the most popular and profitable Marvel IP that Fox controlled, with seven films and a successful Wolverine spinoff franchise that produced three more. With Jake Schreier directing and a script overhaul underway, fans have spent weeks trying to guess who would step into the role of Charles Xavier.
That guessing game got serious just ahead of Disney’s D23 expo. Christopher Abbott had reportedly been testing for the role of Professor Charles Xavier and was emerging as a frontrunner, with prior speculation also pointing to ‘It’ actor Bill Skarsgård and Tom Pelphrey of ‘Ozark’ fame. Neither of those names ultimately panned out, and the studio stayed quiet on the matter for weeks.
Now the news has broken wide open. The account Cosmic Marvel shared the update that Christopher Abbott has officially been cast as Professor X in the ‘X-Men’ reboot, and multiple entertainment outlets have since backed up the claim. Abbott joins a mutant roster that has been slowly coming together in leaks and reports. He would be joining a developing cast that reportedly includes Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. Reports have also pointed to Adam Driver landing the role of Magneto alongside Abbott, giving the reboot two heavyweight names at the center of its central rivalry.
Abbott is not a new face in the Marvel world. He once appeared in a non-MCU Marvel film, playing an assassin named the Foreigner in Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter.’ His broader filmography includes acclaimed work in ‘Possessor,’ ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Bring Them Down’ and the ill fated ‘Wolf Man’ reboot, cementing his reputation as a serious character actor rather than a typical blockbuster leading man.
The casting also carries some symbolic weight. It makes Abbott the second youngest actor to portray Professor X after James McAvoy, a notable shift given that the character traditionally appears much older than his team of mutants in both the comics and the Fox films. Patrick Stewart, meanwhile, is set to return as his own version of the character in ‘Avengers Doomsday’ this December, meaning two very different takes on Charles Xavier will exist in the MCU at once.
Behind the scenes, the project continues to take shape. Sonny Lee Sung Jin, known for ‘Beef,’ and Joanna Calo of ‘The Bear’ have joined to work on a new draft of Michael Lesslie’s script, and Jake Schreier of ‘Thunderbolts’ is officially directing. Sadie Sink has already revealed that the ‘X-Men’ reboot will begin filming next year, which lines up with a possible 2028 release window.
