Few films have left as permanent a mark on box office history as 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ a movie that shattered opening weekend records worldwide and became one of the highest-grossing films ever made. Even seven years later, that kind of cultural weight doesn’t fade easily, especially when Marvel Studios starts using it to build anticipation for what comes next.

That’s exactly the strategy behind ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ the theatrical re-release heading to cinemas worldwide on September 25, positioned as a bridge between the Infinity Saga and December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Beyond the nostalgia of seeing the film back on the big screen, the re-release comes with four minutes of new footage tied directly to ‘Doomsday,’ along with the debut of Disney’s new Infinity Vision premium format.

Tickets for the re-release went on sale August 25, and the response was immediate. According to Global Box Office’s tracking, cited by ComicBook.com, ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ had already “reached the biggest pre-sales this century for a rerelease” within just a few hours of tickets going live, surpassing the previous record held by 2012’s ‘Titanic 3D.’

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Confirms Its New Footage Comes With a Major Catch

That kind of immediate demand makes sense given what’s actually driving ticket sales beyond simple nostalgia. The new footage exclusive to Encore is only available on IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens, meaning fans hoping to see the ‘Doomsday’ bridge material have a genuine reason to book tickets quickly rather than waiting to catch a standard screening later.

That urgency lines up with Disney’s broader strategy for the format rollout. Since ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ won’t have access to IMAX screens in December, with that format already committed to Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ opening the same day, Disney has been using Encore’s presale window to introduce audiences to Infinity Vision well ahead of when ‘Doomsday’ will actually need it to draw crowds.

‘Endgame’ has never really stopped setting records since its original release. The film still holds a spot among the highest-grossing movies of all time worldwide, and its 2019 opening weekend performance reshaped how the industry thought about blockbuster scale for years afterward. Seeing the same film break a new kind of record, this time in the re-release category, speaks to just how much staying power the Infinity Saga’s conclusion still carries with audiences.

That staying power isn’t limited to nostalgia either. With Encore’s runtime clocking in at 185 minutes, four minutes longer than the original’s 181-minute cut, the re-release has already become the longest Marvel Studios release to date, giving longtime fans a genuinely new reason to revisit a story most of them have already seen multiple times.

With presales already outperforming expectations months before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ itself even opens, Marvel appears to be building exactly the kind of momentum it needs heading into December. Between the record-breaking Encore ticket sales and the ongoing rollout of Infinity Vision, Disney is clearly treating this fall as the on-ramp for what it hopes will be one of the biggest theatrical events of the year.

Whether that enthusiasm carries all the way through to ‘Doomsday’s’ own opening weekend remains to be seen, but this early presale record suggests fans are more than ready to reassemble one more time before the next chapter begins.
