The road back to the Avengers has become one of Marvel’s favorite games to play with fans, doling out cryptic hints and social media breadcrumbs long before any official confirmation arrives. Few actors have mastered that art of strategic ambiguity quite like the man behind Marvel’s resident archer.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ barreling toward its December release and the studio’s roster of returning heroes still shifting by the week, any hint from a previously sidelined Avenger is bound to send fans into a frenzy.

Jeremy Renner has teased Hawkeye’s potential return to the Avengers in a new Instagram story, sharing a close-up image of his iconic Hawkeye costume from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The post arrived shortly after Kevin Feige officially confirmed that Renner will reprise Clint Barton for ‘Avengers Infinity Defense,’ a new attraction being added to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure, announced during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23 2026.

The upcoming theme park ride, set to open in 2028, will take guests through Asgard, Wakanda, and New York City as they battle King Thanos, and will reunite Renner with fellow MCU veterans including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Iman Vellani will also appear as Ms. Marvel, greeting guests before they embark on the attraction, according to reporting from ScreenRant.

Renner’s newest post has fans reading between the lines given his current standing within the franchise’s next chapter. As of now, Renner is not officially part of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and Disney’s current cast list doesn’t include him, with the actor previously stating in October 2025 that he wasn’t set to appear in either ‘Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

His confirmed involvement in the theme park attraction doesn’t change that official status, but MCU actors have a well-documented history of misdirection when it comes to surprise appearances. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire famously denied any involvement in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ right up until the film’s release, a precedent that has fans holding onto hope that Renner’s Instagram tease could mean more than just theme park promotion.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already confirmed a massive roster of returning stars regardless of Hawkeye’s involvement, including Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Patrick Stewart as Professor X, among many others. The film marks the beginning of Phase Six for the MCU and is set to hit theaters on December 18, with Robert Downey Jr. returning as the film’s central villain, Victor von Doom.

Given how ambiguous Renner’s post remains, and how tightly Marvel tends to guard its biggest reveals, fans shouldn’t expect confirmation one way or another until much closer to the film’s release. Still, for a character whose story has felt unfinished since his emotional Ronin arc in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the idea of Hawkeye rejoining the team for one more fight feels like exactly the kind of surprise Marvel loves to save for last.

Do you think Jeremy Renner's post is teasing Hawkeye's return in Avengers: Doomsday?
