‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Just Recorded a Secret Message for Halloween Horror Nights, and Fans Have To Track It Down

Horror sequels and spinoffs typically take years to make their way from the big screen into the world of theme park attractions, following a carefully planned pipeline that rarely allows for spontaneity. This year’s Halloween Horror Nights, however, is proving that theory wrong in a big way.

One of 2026’s biggest breakout horror hits managed to leap from movie theaters to Universal’s most terrifying annual event in a matter of weeks, and the collaboration is getting even more personal than fans initially expected.

‘Obsession’ filmmaker Curry Barker has recorded a secret voice message specifically for Halloween Horror Nights attendees, according to creative director John Murdy. Guests are being encouraged to track down Nikki, the film’s central character now roaming the park, and give her a specific password that will be posted on Universal Studios’ social media, with those who succeed potentially receiving something special in return.

Explaining the concept to The Hollywood Reporter, Murdy revealed that he’d noticed a memorable scene in the film where Bear calls the customer service department of the supernatural “One Wish Willow” object, and later discovered Barker himself had voiced that character. Murdy said he asked Barker to record a special message as if he were that same customer service representative, complete with a phone number fans can call to hear an exclusive message straight from the director.

‘Obsession’ follows Bear, a lovesick music store employee who uses a supernatural object to make Nikki fall in love with him, only for his wish to spiral into horrifying consequences once it becomes clear the resulting version of Nikki isn’t quite right. The film became a massive box office success following its May release, grossing an estimated $475 million globally against a production budget of just $750,000.

Murdy has structured Nikki’s appearance at the park differently than most Horror Nights characters, casting traditional actors rather than the usual non-speaking scare performers, using dialogue pulled directly from the film itself. He noted that giving Nikki her authentic voice felt essential, explaining that her lines can be used to either engage or disengage with guests depending on how each interaction unfolds.

According to Attractions Magazine, Barker himself called bringing Nikki to Horror Nights a “dream come true,” while actress Inde Navarrette, who originated the role on screen, has also expressed enthusiasm about watching her character step off the movie screen and into the theme park. The speed of this collaboration is notable in itself, with Murdy explaining that Universal’s creative teams don’t always have the luxury of reacting quickly to a new horror property, but this particular partnership came together because everyone involved with ‘Obsession’ was eager to participate.

Nikki joins several other high-profile horror properties at this year’s event, including a Terror Tram experience built around Art the Clown and a haunted house inspired by ‘Sinners.’ Halloween Horror Nights kicks off August 28 at Universal Orlando, with the Hollywood location following on September 3.
