Hulu’s Breakout Serial Killer Thriller ‘Furious’ Just Landed a Season 2, and the Streamer Isn’t Even Waiting for the Finale

Streaming renewals have become an increasingly cautious business, with most platforms waiting patiently for a full season’s worth of viewership data before committing to a second run. That kind of hesitation has burned plenty of freshman dramas over the years, leaving fans invested in stories that never got a proper continuation.

This time, though, one Disney-owned streamer decided patience wasn’t necessary, making its decision known days before the season even wraps.

‘Furious’ has officially been renewed for Season 2 at Hulu, with creator Elizabeth Meriwether and star Emmy Rossum both set to return as executive producers. The pickup arrives just four days ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale, which premieres August 31, marking an unusually early renewal for a platform that typically waits for long-tail viewership data before making that call.

The crime thriller follows FBI agent Alice Black, played by Rossum, as she hunts down a mysterious and calculating female serial killer portrayed by Lola Petticrew. According to the show’s official logline, both women walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives increasingly intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur in unexpected ways.

Loosely inspired by the 1987 psychological thriller film ‘Black Widow,’ the series marks Meriwether’s dramatic pivot away from the comedic territory she’s best known for through shows like ‘New Girl.’ Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast “I’m Having an Episode,” Meriwether explained her fascination with the subject matter, noting she’d never seen a serial killer show centered on a female killer outside of ‘Killing Eve,’ and that learning most female serial killers have themselves been victims of violence drew her deeper into exploring the character.

Since premiering July 27, ‘Furious’ has quietly become one of Hulu’s biggest success stories of the year. The series reportedly cracked the Top 10 for streaming originals despite launching with only three episodes rather than a full-season drop, and one-day views for Episode 7 were up 40% compared to the premiere, according to figures shared by the streamer.

Beyond the raw viewership numbers, the show is believed to be the number one series on Disney+ and Hulu worldwide for the month of August, while also ranking as the number two freshman drama on Hulu domestically for the entire year so far. That performance, paired with a 98% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, appears to have made the decision to renew an easy one for the streamer.

The renewal comes with a bit of ironic timing, arriving just days after Hulu canceled another freshman original, the comedy ‘Not Suitable for Work,’ underscoring how differently the two shows performed for the platform. Beyond Rossum and Petticrew, the series also stars Quincy Tyler Bernstine as FBI colleague Nora Washington and Scoot McNairy as NYPD homicide detective Danny Kelly, with recurring appearances from Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, and Hope Davis rounding out the ensemble.

While Hulu has yet to reveal any story details, casting updates, or a production timeline for the second season, the early confirmation gives the creative team room to plan ahead rather than scrambling once the finale airs. Given how much momentum the show has built heading into its final Season 1 episode, fans have every reason to expect the cat-and-mouse dynamic between Alice and her elusive target to only intensify from here.
