‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Only Predicted to Land One Oscar Nod, and Fans Have Thoughts
Superhero movies have spent years fighting for genuine respect during awards season, with the Academy typically reserving its love for the genre in only a handful of technical categories. Even massive box office hits tend to hit a ceiling when it comes to actual recognition on nomination morning.
That pattern appears to be holding true once again for one of 2026’s biggest theatrical success stories, despite its record-setting run at the box office.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is predicted to earn just one Oscar nomination heading into the 2027 ceremony, according to Variety’s official predictions, with that expected nod coming in the Best Visual Effects category. The film sits alongside heavyweight competition in that race, including ‘Dune: Part Three,’ ‘The Odyssey,’ ‘Project Hail Mary,’ and ‘Godzilla Minus Zero,’ all vying for a limited number of nomination slots.
The prediction tracks with the franchise’s overall history at the Oscars. Live-action Spider-Man films have historically found their strongest footing in the technical categories, with 2004’s ‘Spider-Man 2’ remaining the only entry in the series to actually win an Academy Award, taking home the statuette for its visual effects work. More recently, 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ broke a lengthy drought for the franchise by landing a Visual Effects nomination of its own.
A Crowded Field Makes The Path Uncertain
Analysts have pointed to the film’s genuinely impressive craftsmanship as the case for its inclusion, particularly its blend of practical and digital effects throughout several elaborate action sequences. According to reporting from GoldDerby, the movie is considered one of the best-looking Marvel films in years, with several of its biggest set pieces largely executed practically rather than relying solely on digital work.
Still, the competition this cycle is unusually stiff, and much of the uncertainty hinges on how ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ performs when it arrives later this year. Historically, three of the four previous ‘Avengers’ films have earned nominations in the Visual Effects category compared to just one for the entire Spider-Man series, meaning Marvel’s own December release could end up crowding out ‘Brand New Day’ entirely if voters decide to consolidate their support behind the more heavily marketed Doomsday event film.
Beyond the Visual Effects race, some awards watchers have floated the idea that the film could find additional support in Production Design, given veteran Marvel production designer Charles Wood’s comic-accurate, brightly colored recreation of New York City for the film’s largely street-level action. Wood previously earned BAFTA and Art Directors Guild nominations for his work on ‘Doctor Strange,’ along with ADG wins for both ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ though he has yet to crack an actual Oscar nomination.

Given the sheer scale of ‘Brand New Day’s’ box office success and the goodwill it’s generated with audiences throughout its record-breaking theatrical run, a single predicted nomination might feel underwhelming to fans who’ve watched the film dominate theaters for weeks on end. Awards voters, however, have consistently shown they weigh craft achievement differently than commercial performance, regardless of how much cultural impact a film manages to generate.
With nominations still months away and the field far from settled, there’s plenty of time for that single predicted nod to either solidify or shift entirely once the rest of the fall’s award contenders make their way into theaters.
