Ridley Scott Just Revealed He’s Secretly Rewriting the ‘Alien’ Franchise’s Next Chapter

Franchise filmmaking has a funny way of pulling its original architects back in, even after they’ve handed the keys to someone else entirely. That’s especially true for a series built on atmosphere and dread as carefully calibrated as this one, where fans have spent years hoping its creator might return to steer the ship once more.

That hope just turned into confirmation, delivered in typically blunt fashion by the man who started it all nearly five decades ago.

Ridley Scott has revealed he is “rewriting” the sequel to 2024’s ‘Alien: Romulus,’ confirming the follow-up will bring back Michael Fassbender’s android character David. Speaking with French outlet AlloCiné, Scott explained his sudden involvement plainly, saying, “I suddenly went back and got involved. The one that just came out [Alien: Romulus] was OK. I think it needs some help. So, I’ve gone back in.”

According to Deadline, Scott went on to explain that the new film would function as a direct continuation of his own earlier prequel work rather than building on Fede Álvarez’s 2024 installment, saying, “I’ve already got a footprint for the next Alien. We did Prometheus, and then Alien: Covenant. So, I’m picking up where we left off in Covenant with Michael Fassbender, who now thinks he’s Ozymandias.”

Scott’s renewed involvement follows a bumpy road behind the scenes for the ‘Romulus’ sequel. According to World of Reel, Álvarez had originally been developing the follow-up before unexpectedly departing the project, reportedly due to creative differences tied to Scott’s own desire to keep control over David’s storyline rather than let another director fold the character into the Romulus timeline.

That timeline distinction matters significantly to how this new film will function within the broader franchise. Where ‘Romulus’ was set between the events of the original ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens,’ Scott’s new project will instead pick up after ‘Alien: Covenant,’ continuing the thread he first established back in 2012’s ‘Prometheus’ and carried through 2017’s ‘Covenant.’ That places the story earlier in the franchise’s internal chronology, following David as he builds what Scott has previously described in comments to the Los Angeles Times as a “brave new world for himself.”

Scott’s fascination with the character centers heavily on artificial intelligence gone rogue, a theme he’s continued to explore across both prequels. Discussing his interest in returning to that idea, he noted his belief that the truly frightening part of AI is that once it goes off the rails, humanity might not even realize it until it’s too late.

Interestingly, Scott’s comments suggest he may not be interested in directing the follow-up himself, having noted separately that while he’d like to see David’s story reach its conclusion, he’s also curious what other filmmakers might bring to the franchise going forward. With Noah Hawley’s ‘Alien: Earth’ television series also expanding the franchise’s universe and reportedly earning Scott’s approval, the ‘Alien’ mythology is clearly entering one of its busiest creative stretches in years.

Given how attached Scott remains to David’s unfinished arc, and with the character’s fate having been left dangling since ‘Covenant’ nearly a decade ago, fans finally have real reason to believe this long-awaited follow-up might actually come together.
