‘The Odyssey’ Just Crossed $550 Million Domestically, and It’s Still Not Slowing Down

Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic gamble has spent nearly two months proving that adult-skewing, nearly three-hour-long adaptations of ancient poetry can still command genuine mainstream box office dominance. Every week seems to bring another milestone crossed, another all-time chart climbed, another sign that this particular theatrical run isn’t ready to wind down anytime soon.

That momentum continued into late August, with the film’s steady weekly hauls pushing it past yet another significant benchmark in its ongoing march up the domestic rankings.

Universal’s ‘The Odyssey‘ has passed the $550 million domestic mark, grossing an estimated $3.74 million on Friday from 2,617 locations, a 27% decrease from the previous Friday. According to BoxOfficeReport, the film’s estimated total domestic gross now stands at $553.26 million, continuing a remarkably slow decline pattern that’s become one of the defining stories of this year’s theatrical box office.

That kind of staying power has been consistent throughout the film’s run. According to Collider, “The Odyssey” recently overtook “The Dark Knight” to become Nolan’s highest-grossing domestic release ever, not adjusted for inflation, having crossed $540 million just one weekend prior with a solid $19 million haul that pushed it into the 20th spot on the all-time domestic chart.

The film’s ability to hold audiences week after week has repeatedly stunned box office analysts. According to ScreenRant, “The Odyssey” posted a week-on-week drop of just 27% during its fifth weekend, an unusually slim decline that helped push it past titles like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Star Wars: Episode IX” on the all-time domestic chart.

Globally, the film has already become Nolan’s highest-grossing release of all time, surpassing both “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight” to cross the $1 billion mark within just three weeks of release, according to Variety. Deadline reported the film’s worldwide total had climbed past $1.1 billion after four weekends, with $461.1 million coming from domestic ticket sales and $643.6 million from international markets, cementing it as the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie ever behind “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

Much of that staying power traces back to the film’s premium format appeal, having become the first movie ever shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras according to ScreenRant, with sold-out large-format screenings continuing to drive demand well past the film’s opening weeks. Critics have responded just as enthusiastically as audiences, with Collider noting the film currently holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, tying “Memento” and “The Dark Knight” as Nolan’s highest-rated release, alongside a strong 97% audience score.

With weeks of sold-out large-format screenings still ahead and the film’s decline rate remaining unusually gentle for a movie now more than a month into its run, “The Odyssey” shows every sign of continuing its climb up the all-time charts before its theatrical journey finally winds down. Given how far this Homeric epic has already traveled at the box office, crossing $550 million domestically feels less like a finish line and more like another checkpoint on the way to something even bigger.
