‘The Boys’ Star Karl Urban Just Explained Why He’d Turn Down Wolverine, Even if Marvel Offered It to Him
For years, one particular fan-casting campaign has refused to die down, with online communities repeatedly photoshopping and deepfaking a certain New Zealand actor into the role of one of Marvel’s most iconic mutants. Most actors caught in that kind of persistent speculation eventually address it with a mix of flattery and polite deflection.
This time, though, the response carried something a little more personal, rooted less in practical concerns about age or franchise longevity and more in genuine reverence for the man who defined the role for nearly two decades.
Karl Urban says he would refuse the chance to play Wolverine in the MCU out of respect for Hugh Jackman, explaining, “I just want to see more Hugh Jackman as Wolverine – I wouldn’t want to touch it, just out of respect, I really wouldn’t.” The comments mark a notable shift in tone from Urban’s previous responses to the persistent fan campaign pushing him for the role, which has followed him for years thanks to his gruff, comic book-ready screen presence in projects like “The Boys.”
Urban’s history with this particular fan-casting stretches back several years, with fans repeatedly pointing to his intense performance as Billy Butcher and his broader comic book pedigree, including roles in “Judge Dredd” and as Skurge the Executioner in “Thor: Ragnarok,” as reasons he’d make a natural fit for Wolverine. Back in 2022, Urban addressed the campaign with The Guardian by focusing on practical concerns rather than sentiment, joking that a studio casting Wolverine would want someone younger who could commit to multiple films, quipping, “You’re not going to get three films out of Karl Urban unless you want a 65-year-old Wolverine.”
That earlier, more pragmatic reasoning has clearly evolved into something more personal over time. Jackman played Wolverine across nine films spanning 17 years, from 2000’s original “X-Men” through 2017’s “Logan,” a performance so closely tied to the character that it helped launch the modern era of comic book blockbusters. According to SlashFilm’s earlier coverage of Urban’s comments, the actor has consistently described the fan support as genuinely flattering, even while expressing doubt about whether he’d actually get the opportunity.
That doubt now appears to have transformed into something closer to conviction. Rather than framing his reluctance around age or franchise logistics, Urban’s latest comments suggest a deeper unwillingness to step into a role so thoroughly defined by another actor’s decades-long performance, regardless of whether Marvel Studios ever came calling.
Marvel has yet to officially cast a new live-action Wolverine following the character’s absorption into the MCU after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, leaving the door open for continued speculation from fans eager to see the mutant return to screens. Given how firmly Urban has now positioned himself against taking on the role, it seems increasingly unlikely that this particular fan campaign will ever see its wish fulfilled, no matter how many deepfakes and fan-casting threads continue circulating online.
For an actor who’s built much of his career on stepping into other iconic roles, from “Star Trek’s” Dr. McCoy to “The Boys'” Billy Butcher, Urban’s stance on Wolverine stands out as a rare moment of him actively closing a door rather than leaving it open.
