John Stewart’s New Origin Story in ‘Lanterns’ Changes Everything Fans Thought They Knew

DC’s live-action Green Lantern universe has spent its opening episodes rewriting expectations at nearly every turn. First came a premiere twist that killed off one of its two apparent leads, and now the show has turned its attention toward the man left to carry the mantle forward.

That shift has meant digging deep into John Stewart’s past, and the results have reshaped a character comic fans have followed for decades. Rather than sticking closely to any single version of his comic book origin, ‘Lanterns’ has built something that borrows pieces from multiple eras while adding an entirely new emotional core.

John Stewart’s backstory has been significantly updated for the DC Universe. His father was actually the one originally chosen to become Green Lantern first, but he failed the test out of fear, and Hal Jordan was selected instead. From there, John’s parents negotiated with the Guardians to train their son for the role from childhood, pushing him to join the Marines and become fearless before he ever touched a ring. Along the way, he also developed a love of drawing that eventually led him to art school.

That reveal comes from the show’s third episode, which functions as an extended flashback explaining exactly how John ended up on the path to becoming a Green Lantern. According to the episode, the Guardians first approached John Stewart Sr., played by J. Alphonse Nicholson, decades earlier, only for him to fail the test because of visible fear, a quality the ring simply won’t tolerate.

That failure sent John’s father into a spiral, and it fell to his mother, Bernadette, played by Jasmine Cephas Jones, to make sure her son wouldn’t suffer the same fate. She and John Sr. spent years deliberately testing their child, from shooting an apple off his head to leaving him stranded in a dangerous neighborhood, all in an effort to strip away any trace of fear before he ever faced the Guardians himself.

John went on to follow his father into the Marines, eventually becoming a sergeant major and a skilled sniper. His military career came to an abrupt and unfair end after Hal Jordan interfered with one of his missions, forcing John into a dishonorable discharge so the government could avoid a diplomatic incident. It’s only afterward, with his mother’s encouragement, that John enrolls in art school and is eventually handed a Green Lantern ring during what he believes is a routine class evaluation.

The changes mark a notable departure from John Stewart’s comic book history, where his backstory has shifted repeatedly over the decades, from architect to soldier to various family configurations depending on the era. This new version blends his Marine sniper background with an artistic side more commonly associated with fellow Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, giving the character a hybrid origin that still manages to feel distinctly his own.

It’s a heavier, more layered take than anything Stewart has gotten in live action before, and it reframes his entire journey as something engineered by his parents rather than pure chance. Whether that reworking sits well with longtime fans of the character remains to be seen, but it has undeniably given ‘Lanterns’ one of its strongest episodes yet.
