Julia Louis-Dreyfus Just Admitted She Never Actually Watched ‘Friends,’ and She Has a Very Good Reason
Sitcom rivalries have a way of becoming permanent fixtures in pop culture lore, especially when two shows dominate the same network at the exact same moment. For nearly half a decade, two of television’s most beloved comedies aired back to back on NBC’s legendary Thursday night lineup, both cementing themselves as defining shows of the 1990s.
That overlap has long fueled speculation about whether the stars of one show ever paid much attention to the other, especially given how tightly linked their legacies have become in the years since both series ended. One half of that pairing has now finally settled the question, and her answer might surprise longtime fans of both shows.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus admits she was never a ‘Friends’ fan, according to TheWrap. Appearing on Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd’s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Louis-Dreyfus told him plainly, “I didn’t really watch ‘Friends.’ I mean, I’ve seen bits and bobs of it.”
Her explanation had less to do with any rivalry and more to do with sheer logistics. “I was doing ‘Seinfeld,’ I had both of my kids during that time,” she explained. “And you’ll see, if you want children, you’ll see if you’re working and you have kids, that’s a balancing act like no other.” She added with a laugh, “That’s why I was enormous on that show. I was going up and down up and down with pregnancies.”
Louis-Dreyfus starred as Elaine Benes on ‘Seinfeld’ for five years before ‘Friends’ even premiered in 1994, with both shows sharing NBC’s Thursday night home through 1998. When pressed by Burd about whether she ever felt ‘Seinfeld’ was in direct competition with ‘Friends,’ Louis-Dreyfus brushed off the idea entirely, responding simply, “No, because they came after us.”
That podcast appearance came during a free-wheeling conversation with Burd and fellow hosts Kristin Batalucco and Benny Blanco, who covered everything from homemade sauces to parenthood and comedy throughout the episode. It marked one of several recent moments where Louis-Dreyfus has opened up about her ‘Seinfeld’ years with a fresh, reflective candor.
In a separate December appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Louis-Dreyfus revealed she does have one lingering regret tied to the ‘Friends‘ era, admitting she wishes Elaine’s wardrobe had leaned into something sexier, similar to what Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow wore on the rival show. “All those girls were so sexy!” she recalled thinking at the time. “I should have been sexy… This is such a missed opportunity.”
Despite never becoming a devoted ‘Friends’ viewer herself, Louis-Dreyfus has continued to speak fondly about her own show’s legacy over the years, even as she’s remained firmly opposed to any kind of ‘Seinfeld’ reunion or revival. For an actress whose career has spanned decades of beloved comedy work, her honest admission about skipping ‘Friends’ feels less like a diss and more like a genuinely relatable byproduct of juggling a hit show and a growing family at the same time.
