Mythological epics don’t come along often on the scale Bollywood has been promising with this particular project. Years of anticipation, shifting timelines, and a steady drip of teasers have kept fans speculating about when they’d finally see Ranbir Kapoor step into one of Indian mythology’s most iconic roles.

That wait is officially coming to an end, with a coordinated global release plan now locked in place. The announcement puts a firm date on a project that has been in various stages of development for well over a decade, dating back to when producer Namit Malhotra first set out to adapt the ancient epic for the screen.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has confirmed that ‘Ramayana‘ will release globally on November 6, positioning the film’s arrival just ahead of the Diwali holiday period. The two-part adaptation stars Ranbir Kapoor as exiled prince Rama, Sai Pallavi as his consort Sita, and Yash as the demon king Ravana, following their story through exile, abduction, and the war between righteousness and evil that follows.

Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for films like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Chhichhore,’ helms the ambitious two-part project, which is being designed with international audiences in mind. The film will release in multiple languages, including English, reflecting the scale of the crossover appeal the filmmakers are aiming for with this adaptation.

The choice of a November release window isn’t accidental, tying directly into the story’s own themes. Diwali marks the return of Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya following fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana, with the holiday’s traditional lighting of lamps symbolizing the illumination of Ayodhya on the night the prince returned home.

That symbolism extends into the film’s broader release strategy as well, with ‘Ramayana’ Part One opening during the Diwali holiday frame this year, while Part Two is set to follow during Diwali 2027. It’s a deliberate structure that mirrors the festival’s significance within the story being told on screen.

Beyond the timing, the production itself has leaned heavily into scale and ambition, with both installments filmed for IMAX presentation. The project marks the first collaboration between Oscar-winning composers A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, adding another layer of prestige to a film already being described as an unprecedented cinematic spectacle.

Speaking about the decision to cast Kapoor in such a culturally significant role, Tiwari explained that there was nobody better suited to portray the character and manage the expectations tied to it, according to Gulf News, which cited an interview Tiwari gave to NDTV. That comment underscores just how much pressure comes with adapting a story that has resonated across generations and cultures for thousands of years.

The film is produced by Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG, alongside Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Malhotra, whose past work includes visual effects contributions to Hollywood films like ‘Dune’ and ‘Inception,’ has spoken about the project as a decade-long dream finally coming together.

With Sony Pictures Entertainment handling international distribution, ‘Ramayana’ is positioned to reach a significantly broader audience than a typical Bollywood release, especially given the multilingual rollout strategy. That approach signals just how much confidence the studio has in the project’s ability to cross over beyond its core Indian audience.

Given the scale of the production, the star power involved, and the cultural weight of the source material, ‘Ramayana’ is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched film events of the year. Whether it can deliver on the years of buildup remains to be seen, but the pieces are certainly in place for a major moment come November.
