‘Chad Powers’ Season 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Russ’s Biggest Secret Finally Comes to Light
Sports comedies rarely reinvent themselves after their first season, often settling into a comfortable rhythm once the premise has been established. Glen Powell’s unlikely hit managed to avoid that trap entirely, building on an already absurd premise about a disgraced quarterback hiding behind elaborate prosthetics to sneak back onto the football field.
That absurdity became the show’s biggest strength once Season 1 ended with Coach Ricky Hudson discovering Russ Holliday’s secret identity. Rather than resetting back into easy disguise-comedy territory, Season 2 leaned directly into the fallout of that reveal, refusing to let its central lie stay comfortably hidden.
The season’s finale, titled “12th Quarter,” closes out this chaotic stretch with major revelations, a nail-biting football finish, and a cliffhanger that leaves Russ’s secret hanging by a thread. Throughout the season, teammate Gerry grew increasingly suspicious of Chad, going so far as stalking the quarterback and everyone close to him, eventually spotting Coach Ricky sneaking around and catching a glimpse of Chad’s supposed father wearing an obviously fake wig and prosthetic nose at the homecoming banquet.
That suspicion reached a breaking point in the penultimate episode, “11th Quarter,” when Gerry broke into Russ and Danny’s house, attacked Danny, and stole the prosthetics used to disguise Russ as Chad. The finale picks up in the aftermath, with Russ meeting Gerry at a movie theater, where the backup quarterback laid out his demands clearly: throw the final regular season game against Texas on purpose, take the blame for planting a fake gun in Gerry’s locker, and Gerry would stay quiet about Chad’s true identity.
A devastated Russ agreed to Gerry’s terms, but Ricky and Danny weren’t fooled by his forced calm. Once Ricky learned the full scope of Gerry’s scheme, including a $200,000 bet riding on Chad delivering a historically bad performance, she made a choice of her own rather than letting Russ throw the game.
Despite having just accepted a coaching job at Syracuse, Ricky decided to help Chad win anyway, pulling from old game tape of Russ’s Oregon days to call trick plays that pushed the Catfish back into contention. It worked, setting up a tense final sequence where Chad had to choose between honoring Gerry’s rules or breaking them entirely to score the winning touchdown.
After a heartfelt exchange with Coach Hudson, who told him she was proud of the season regardless of the outcome, Chad ran the ball in for a real, unrigged win. Gerry stormed the field in a rage, only to be knocked out cold by Tricia Yeager’s security guard, revealing that Tricia had known Chad’s true identity all along, having learned it from Danny, and had quietly negotiated to keep Russ and Danny safe by moving them onto her ranch.
The episode’s final twist unfolds in the locker room, where Ricky and Russ share an emotional moment as she helps fix his slipping prosthetic ahead of her planned move to New York. Overcome with emotion, Russ confesses his love for her, and the two share their first kiss, one passionate enough that Ricky begins pulling off the remaining prosthetic on his face.
Before the reveal can fully happen, Coach Hudson bursts through the locker room door, and the episode cuts to black just as Russ turns away to hide his slipping mask. It’s left deliberately unclear how much Hudson actually saw, setting up a major question mark heading into any potential future season.
Several threads remain unresolved by the time the credits roll, including whether Hudson truly recognized Russ, whether Ricky will still follow through on her move to Syracuse after that locker room moment, and whether Gerry is really out of the picture for good. With Tricia Yeager’s involvement adding an entirely new layer of complication to Russ’s double life, there’s clearly plenty more football left to be played if ‘Chad Powers’ returns for a third season.
