‘Alien: Earth’ Season 2 Officially Begins Production, With Peter Dinklage Joining the Cast

FX’s sci-fi horror universe has spent the past year building one of the most talked-about new entries in the ‘Alien’ franchise, blending corporate intrigue with the kind of body horror longtime fans expect. That first season closed out with a major power shift, leaving plenty of unanswered questions about where the story would head next.

Those questions are finally starting to get answered, as production on the follow-up season has kicked into gear. FX shared the first behind-the-scenes footage from the set this week, confirming that cameras are officially rolling on the next chapter of Wendy’s story.

‘Alien: Earth‘ Season 2 is now officially in production, with creator Noah Hawley returning as showrunner and Sydney Chandler back to lead the ensemble cast. Filming has shifted from Thailand, where the first season was shot, to London’s Pinewood Studios, the same facility that previously housed production on the original 1979 ‘Alien’ film, along with ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Prometheus.’

Joining the cast for Season 2 are Peter Dinklage, Tracey Ullman, Sam Spruell and Jerome Flynn, adding significant star power to an already stacked ensemble. Spruell’s casting reunites him with Hawley following their previous collaboration on ‘Fargo,’ while Flynn reunites with his ‘Game of Thrones’ co-star Dinklage for the new season.

Season 1 introduced audiences to a 2120 setting where five corporations, including the infamous Weyland-Yutani, wielded power comparable to nations themselves. That premise centered heavily on Wendy and a group of tactical soldiers discovering the planet’s greatest threat after a deep-space research vessel crash-landed on Earth.

Speaking about his plans for the new season, Hawley explained that Weyland-Yutani’s ships are on their way and bring nothing but problems, adding that he’s interested in exploring the corporate politics of a world where corporations and billionaires hold an almost gravitational pull toward monopoly, describing it as having a bit of “Game of Thrones” energy to the power struggles involved, according to Bleeding Cool.

Hawley also indicated that the story’s emotional core will remain centered on Wendy and the children’s fight for autonomy, even as the show expands beyond the island setting established in Season 1. He noted that containment has always been central to the franchise’s themes, and that maintaining any sense of containment will become increasingly difficult as the story’s scope grows.

Beyond the immediate plans for Season 2, Hawley has expressed hope that the series could continue well beyond its next chapter. He said he has a place he’s ultimately working toward, though he’s unsure exactly how long it will take to get there, adding that as long as execution quality and audience interest remain strong, the franchise could continue for as long as it’s nurtured properly.

Season 1 earned strong critical reception upon its release last August, currently sitting at a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That reception, combined with Hawley’s new overall production deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television, suggests the network is fully committed to building out this corner of the ‘Alien’ universe for the long term.

While Season 2 has officially begun filming, FX has not yet announced a specific premiere date for the new episodes. Given the timeline of production kicking off now, most projections point toward a potential late 2027 release window, though that remains speculative until the network confirms specifics.

For fans who spent the past year theorizing about where Hawley would take Wendy’s story next, seeing actual production footage marks a significant step forward after months of casting announcements and script development. With Dinklage and several other high-profile additions now locked in, anticipation for Season 2 is only likely to keep building from here.
