‘The Gentlemen’ Star Theo James Explains Why He’s Officially Ruling Himself Out of the James Bond Race

Speculation around who will inherit the James Bond mantle has become something of a national pastime in Britain, with fans and bookmakers alike constantly reshuffling their list of favorites. Every actor rumored for the role eventually faces the same round of questions, and how they answer often says as much about their priorities as it does about the franchise itself.

He told GQ that becoming Bond would be somewhere he could never come back from, describing the sudden loss of anonymity that would come with the role and what that scrutiny might mean for his children as they try to find their own identities.

James, who shares two young children with his wife Ruth Kearney, has been consistent in framing his reluctance around family rather than career strategy. He acknowledged to GQ that being offered a huge, sexy part capable of changing his life forever is intoxicating in the moment, but ultimately concluded it wouldn’t be worth the cost to his family’s normalcy.

James has spoken previously about deliberately retreating from bigger, more mainstream projects after experiencing a surge of attention following his breakout role in the ‘Divergent’ film series back in 2014. That earlier brush with intense public scrutiny appears to have shaped much of his subsequent approach to choosing roles, favoring smaller or more character-driven projects over franchise tentpoles.

That pattern held true even as his profile grew again through ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘The Gentlemen,’ both of which brought him back into serious Bond conversations without ever tempting him to reconsider. His repeated, consistent messaging across multiple interviews suggests this isn’t a passing hesitation but a firmly settled position.

With James now having publicly closed the door on the role at least twice within the span of a few weeks, speculation will likely shift more firmly toward other frequently mentioned names like Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jacob Elordi and Louis Partridge. Amazon MGM has yet to announce an official decision on who will take over the iconic role following Daniel Craig’s exit from the franchise.

For fans who spent years hoping James might eventually take on 007, his latest comments make clear that no amount of franchise prestige is likely to change his mind. Given how consistently he’s framed the decision around protecting his family’s privacy, it appears James considers this one Bond debate that’s already settled.
