‘Zootopia 3’ Will Keep Fans Guessing on Nick and Judy’s Will-They-Won’t-They Romance

Animated buddy duos rarely spark quite the level of shipping frenzy that this particular fox-and-rabbit partnership has managed to generate. What started as a straightforward mismatched-partner dynamic in the original 2016 film has since snowballed into one of Disney Animation’s most passionately debated fan discussions.

That debate only intensified with ‘Zootopia 2,’ which leaned heavily into romantic-coded imagery between Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, from a trip to a spot designed for married couples to a steady stream of moments fans have affectionately dubbed “Wildehopps.” With the sequel going on to become Disney’s highest-grossing animated film of all time, the studio has plenty of incentive to keep that tension simmering as the franchise moves forward.

Director Byron Howard confirmed that ‘Zootopia 3’ will continue leaning into the tension between fans who want Nick and Judy to become a couple and those who prefer seeing them remain close friends. Howard explained that seeing fans so invested in the debate speaks to just how much people have come to believe in these characters as real, adding that the filmmaking team plans to keep leaning into that dynamic going forward, according to The Walt Disney Company.

That comment signals the will-they-won’t-they dynamic isn’t going away anytime soon, even as the franchise continues expanding its world with new characters and settings. Whether the series eventually commits to a romantic pairing or keeps fans guessing indefinitely appears to be a deliberate creative choice rather than an unresolved oversight.

Beyond the Nick and Judy question, ‘Zootopia 3’ is also expanding its animal roster in a new direction. Producer Clark Spencer confirmed the film will introduce birds into the world for the first time, following the addition of reptiles in the previous installment, allowing the story’s setting to keep feeling fresh as the franchise continues growing.

Spencer noted that the core of the series will always remain centered on Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, regardless of how many new districts, species, or characters get folded into the expanding world. That commitment to keeping the central partnership as the emotional anchor, even while the surrounding universe grows larger, has been a consistent theme across both sequels so far.

Howard has previously addressed the shipping debate directly, describing the creative team as fans of the Nick-Judy relationship themselves and acknowledging there’s genuine chemistry between the characters, largely thanks to the performances from Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman. That acknowledgment, paired with his more recent comments about continuing to lean into the tension, suggests the studio views the ongoing fan debate as a genuine asset rather than something to resolve too quickly.

Anticipation for a third installment had been building for months before Disney made anything official, with Goodwin previously telling The Hollywood Reporter at the ‘Zootopia 2’ premiere that she was actively hoping to manifest a follow-up film. That wish has now been granted, giving fans a confirmed next chapter to look forward to.

Given that animated features from Disney typically take four to five years to complete, some early estimates suggest ‘Zootopia 3’ could arrive around 2030, though Disney has yet to confirm an official release timeline. For now, fans will have to keep speculating about where Nick and Judy’s relationship goes next, armed with Howard’s confirmation that the franchise has no plans to let that particular tension fade away anytime soon.
