James Bond Casting Mystery Gets Even Bigger After Writer Steven Knight Refuses to Talk

The wait to find out who will become the next James Bond just got even more interesting. Fans have been trying to figure out who will replace Daniel Craig for months, and now comments from Gary Oldman and screenwriter Steven Knight have added even more fuel to the rumors.

The biggest name in the latest speculation is Jack Lowden. Oldman, who works with Lowden on Slow Horses, recently appeared to suggest that the actor may have already been chosen to play Bond. The problem is that nothing has been officially announced, and nobody involved with the movie seems willing to confirm it.

Oldman spoke about Lowden during an interview with Canada’s Global. He made it sound like the decision could already be finished behind closed doors. “It’s been rumored that he’s on the shortlist,” Oldman said. He then went much further, adding that producers “have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.”

Those comments immediately got Bond fans talking. If Oldman’s information is correct, it would mean the next 007 could already be decided while audiences are still debating the shortlist.

Naturally, attention then turned to Steven Knight. The Peaky Blinders creator is writing the next James Bond movie, so he would almost certainly know a lot about the plans for the character. Knight was asked directly about the casting during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Instead of denying the rumor, Knight refused to answer.

“I cannot speak about this subject. Much as I would dearly love to,” Knight said.

That answer did not exactly calm things down. Host Anna Foster then asked Knight whether he already knew who would play Bond while writing the script. Once again, he gave an answer that revealed very little while still leaving fans wondering if he knows more than he can say.

“It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor,” Knight explained.

Foster tried again and asked when Knight learned who the actor would be. Knight simply laughed before responding, “I refer you to my previous answer.”

For fans, that is about as close to a tease as they could have hoped for. Knight never confirmed that Lowden has been selected, but he also never directly said that Oldman’s claim was wrong.

The writer did speak more openly about the Bond franchise itself. Knight said he understands the responsibility that comes with writing a character who has been around for decades and has already been shaped by many different actors and filmmakers.

“The thing with Bond is it’s its own universe, and it’s its own franchise. So there are certain rules. I mean, obviously you have to move it along, but I love where it sits. I love that it’s British. I love that it’s not DC or Marvel … So I feel a responsibility to the text,” Knight said.

He also joked about the importance of the job, describing his role as “doing my duty for King and country.”

The next Bond movie already has a major creative team in place. Denis Villeneuve is directing, while Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing for Amazon MGM Studios. The casting process has reportedly been moving forward, with Jack Lowden, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner among the names that have been linked to the role.

Of course, none of those rumors mean anything until the studio makes the official announcement. Bond casting has always been closely guarded, and the studio has plenty of reasons to keep the identity of the next 007 secret for as long as possible.

Still, Gary Oldman’s comments are hard to ignore. If he is right, the biggest question may no longer be who will become Bond. It may simply be when the studio plans to tell everyone.

For now, Jack Lowden remains at the center of the conversation, while Steven Knight’s refusal to confirm or deny anything has only made the mystery bigger. Fans may have to wait a little longer, but it certainly feels like the next James Bond announcement could be getting closer.
