The Russo Brothers are once again stepping into one of Marvel’s biggest projects, but this time they are taking on a challenge that is even harder than it looks. Joe and Anthony Russo are not just finishing Avengers: Doomsday. They are also already working on the movie that comes after it, Avengers: Secret Wars.

According to a new interview with the directors, Doomsday has now moved into the editing and scoring stage. That means the movie is getting closer to being finished, with the team working on the final shape of the film and its music. At the same time, the Russos have started early work on Secret Wars, which is expected to begin filming in mid-2026.

Doing two giant Marvel movies at nearly the same time is a huge job. The brothers have been through something similar before when they made Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame back to back. Still, Joe Russo admitted that handling two movies at once is incredibly difficult.

“When you’re doing one of these movies it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done,” Joe said. “When you’re doing two of them, it’s almost inconceivable. But it’s the second time around we’re doing two back to back.”

The Russos have plenty of experience dealing with huge casts, complicated stories and movies that connect to other parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That experience is one of the main reasons Marvel turned to them again for Doomsday and Secret Wars.

The two movies are also being worked on by some familiar names. Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt are editing both films, while Alan Silvestri is returning to create the music. Silvestri previously worked on several major Avengers movies, making his return another link to the earlier era of the MCU.

There is also a lot of pressure on Doomsday. Marvel has spent years trying to bring back the excitement that surrounded movies like Infinity War and Endgame. Avengers: Endgame became a massive worldwide hit, earning around $2.8 billion at the box office.

The Russos know that fans are expecting something big from their return. But Anthony Russo says they are not looking at the job as if they have to fix the entire MCU.

When asked if Doomsday could help get Marvel’s larger universe back on track, Anthony explained that their job is more focused.

“It’s a great question. It’s part of the unique challenge,” Anthony said. He then added, “The thing that Joe and I have always appreciated about our collaboration with Marvel is: Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU. We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things.”

That approach could be important for Doomsday. Instead of trying to solve every problem in the MCU, the Russos are focusing on telling their own story while bringing together a large group of characters.

Another major reason fans are watching closely is Robert Downey Jr. After playing Tony Stark for years, Downey is returning to Marvel in a very different role. This time, he will play Doctor Doom.

Downey’s return has already created a lot of attention around the movie. Reports have also said that the actor would not have returned without the Russo Brothers directing, making their reunion even more interesting for Marvel fans.

Doomsday finished filming after production began in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England. Now that editing and scoring are underway, the movie is moving toward its planned December 18 release.

But the Russos are already looking beyond that date. Secret Wars is scheduled to follow in December 2027, meaning the brothers have another massive Marvel movie waiting for them even before Doomsday reaches theaters.

For now, fans will have to wait and see if the Russos can repeat the success they had with Infinity War and Endgame. One thing is already clear, though. They are taking on an enormous amount of work, with one Avengers movie being finished while another is already taking shape.
