Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ Remake Finally Has a Release Date & a New Trailer
Nintendo has finally revealed when fans can return to one of the most famous adventures in video game history. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will officially launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, giving players a modern version of the Nintendo 64 classic just weeks before another huge game arrives. With GTA 6 also expected around the same holiday season, Nintendo has picked a very busy time to bring one of its biggest Zelda games back.
The release date was announced during Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, where the company also showed a much longer gameplay trailer. Until now, Nintendo had been fairly quiet about the remake. The project was first confirmed for Switch 2 in June, but that announcement only gave fans a short look at the updated game. The new presentation finally showed how much work has gone into rebuilding the classic.
Ocarina of Time originally launched in 1998 and quickly became one of the most important games ever made. It helped define how 3D adventure games could work, from exploring large environments to fighting enemies and solving puzzles. The original still has a 99 score on Metacritic, which shows just how highly it continues to be regarded decades after its release. Because of that reputation, Nintendo has a lot to prove with this new version.
From the footage shown in the latest trailer, this is not looking like a simple graphics upgrade. Nintendo appears to have rebuilt much of the game with a more modern visual style while still keeping the overall feeling of the original adventure. The world looks more detailed, the characters have been redesigned, and Hyrule has a more realistic look. At the same time, Nintendo does not seem to be copying the visual style of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, which gives this remake its own identity.
The gameplay is also getting some major changes. Link will have more freedom of movement than he did on the Nintendo 64, including the ability to jump, sprint with a new dash move, and swim and dive underwater. Nintendo is also making some of the older systems much easier to use. Players will be able to switch items more quickly instead of constantly opening menus, which should make combat and exploration feel smoother.
Another big change is the addition of fully voiced cutscenes. The original game relied heavily on text, so hearing characters speak will make the story feel very different. Nintendo is also adding a new feature called Threads of Time, which works as a quest log and helps players keep track of what they have done and where they need to go next. A new day-and-night cycle will also change how the world looks as players explore it.
Nintendo is even adding a fun new way to use the Ocarina itself. Players can reportedly hum a tune into the Switch 2 controller’s microphone, allowing Link to play the matching song in the game. It is a small feature, but it shows that Nintendo is not simply updating the graphics and calling it a day. The company is looking for ways to make familiar parts of the adventure feel new again.
The remake will also be part of Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary celebration. Alongside the game, Nintendo announced a limited-edition Zelda-themed Switch 2 console featuring special franchise designs. The physical version of Ocarina of Time will cost $69.99, while the digital version will be available for $59.99 through the Nintendo eShop.
Still, Ocarina of Time has something very few games can claim: decades of history behind it. Nintendo is not just bringing back an old game. It is rebuilding one of Zelda’s most important adventures for a completely new generation while giving longtime fans a reason to experience it all over again. If the finished game lives up to what Nintendo has shown so far, November could be a very big month for Zelda fans.
