The Punisher’s MCU Future Could Be Bigger than Anyone Expected, According to New Reports

The Punisher could be heading toward a much bigger future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Marvel Studios reportedly has one major decision to make first. The studio is said to be discussing whether Frank Castle’s next story should become a full Disney+ series or a feature film. Either option would be a major step up for the character after his recent return in The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle has quickly become one of the more talked-about parts of Marvel’s street-level world. After spending years away from the MCU, Bernthal stepped back into the role for the Disney+ special, giving fans another chance to see his brutal version of the character. The special was smaller than a traditional Marvel project, but it appears to have given the studio enough confidence to keep the story going.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel is now considering two different directions for the next chapter. The studio could turn the follow-up into a full series, giving Frank more time to develop his story, or it could take the character to the big screen for a standalone movie. Marvel has not officially confirmed the report, so fans should still treat the information as a rumor for now.

The idea of another Punisher project is not exactly new. Richtman previously reported that Marvel had already approved another project following One Last Kill. At the time, there was no clear word on whether it would be another special, a series, or something much larger. Now, the possibility of a movie suggests Marvel may be thinking bigger about what it can do with Bernthal’s version of Frank Castle.

There is also a clear reason to continue the story. One Last Kill did not completely close the door on Frank’s latest conflict. Ma Gnucci survived after Frank decided to save a child instead of killing her, leaving their rivalry open for another chapter. That gives Marvel an easy storyline to build around if the studio decides to move forward with a sequel.

Another name that could become important is Barracuda. The character is a well-known Punisher villain from the comics and was created by writer Garth Ennis. Reports have mentioned him as a possible future opponent for Frank, although nothing has been officially announced about the villain appearing in the MCU.

Bernthal could also have a bigger role behind the scenes this time. For One Last Kill, he worked as a co-writer and executive producer alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green. That involvement reportedly gave him more control over how Frank was handled, something that could become even more important if Marvel turns the character into a larger project.

The decision between a series and a movie could also change the way Marvel tells Frank’s story. A series would give the writers several episodes to explore his relationships, his past and the choices that continue to haunt him. A movie, on the other hand, could give The Punisher a much bigger action story and potentially connect him with more characters from the MCU.

Frank’s return also gained more attention after his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That crossover helped show that Marvel is willing to place The Punisher deeper into its current street-level stories instead of keeping him separate from the rest of the universe.

For now, there is no official release date, confirmed director, or announced cast beyond Bernthal’s reported involvement. Marvel has also not confirmed Daniel Richtman’s claims. Still, if the studio really is deciding between a series and a movie, it suggests Frank Castle may have a much bigger future ahead.

After years of waiting, Punisher fans could finally be getting more of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle. The only question is whether Marvel wants to give him a whole season to tell his next story or put him on the big screen for one brutal new mission.
