‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 Is Losing Viewers Fast, and Netflix Should Be Worried

The Gentlemen is back on Netflix, but the return of Guy Ritchie’s crime series has not gone quite as planned. Season 2 arrived with Theo James and Kaya Scodelario back as Eddie and Susie, bringing fans another round of crime, money, power and chaos. The show already had a strong audience after its first season, so expectations were high. However, the early numbers suggest that a lot of viewers did not come back for the second chapter.

According to Netflix’s own viewing figures, The Gentlemen Season 2 opened with 6.7 million views during its first few days. That is a major drop from Season 1, which pulled in 12.2 million views during the same period after its release in 2024. The difference works out to roughly 45%, which makes the second season’s opening much harder to ignore. The new episodes also entered Netflix’s global chart at number three instead of taking the top spot like the first season did.

The numbers become even more interesting when you look at the total viewing time. Season 2 recorded almost 39% fewer hours watched, despite the new season being slightly longer. Netflix also appeared to put plenty of effort into getting people interested again, with Theo James doing a noticeable amount of promotion before the release. On paper, the show had plenty going for it, but the audience response has clearly been smaller this time.

What makes the situation strange is that critics seem to like the new season more. Rotten Tomatoes currently has Season 2 sitting at 82%, compared with 75% for the first season. So this does not look like a case of viewers simply deciding that the show has become worse. If anything, the critical response suggests that the series has managed to keep its quality while losing some of its audience.

One possible reason is the huge gap between seasons. Fans had to wait around two and a half years to see what happened next. That is a long time in the streaming world, especially when viewers have dozens of other shows competing for their attention. Interestingly, Season 1 returned to Netflix’s global Top 10 around the same time Season 2 launched, picking up 3.2 million views as people went back to refresh their memories before starting the new episodes.

The story itself also moves forward from the first season. Eddie and Susie are now deeper inside Bobby’s criminal world, but things quickly start going wrong because of Bobby’s decisions. Their position is no longer as secure as it once seemed, giving the new season another messy situation to explore. The cast and basic formula remain familiar, but Netflix still has to convince viewers that there is enough new material to keep watching.

The Gentlemen is also part of a larger trend affecting Netflix shows. Several returning series have struggled to match the numbers of their first seasons. Wednesday Season 2 reportedly dropped 31%, while Beef Season 2 suffered an even larger decline of 62%. That does not mean every second season is in trouble, but it does show how difficult it can be for Netflix to keep an audience waiting for years between releases.

There is at least some good news for The Gentlemen. Netflix had already renewed the series for a third season before Season 2 premiered. That means the lower opening numbers are unlikely to immediately put the future of the show in danger. The real question now is whether Season 2 can build momentum over the next few weeks and bring more viewers back.

For now, The Gentlemen finds itself in an unusual position. The critics are happy, the story is continuing and Season 3 is already on the way, but the audience numbers have taken a serious hit. The information comes from Netflix’s reported viewing data, while the comparisons with other shows highlight a bigger problem for streaming series: keeping viewers interested after a long wait. If Season 2 can recover in the coming weeks, the disappointing debut may eventually become just a bump in the road. If not, Netflix may have to rethink how it handles long gaps between seasons.
