‘Dune: Part Three’ Is Already Breaking Imax Records Before Fans Have Seen It

Dune: Part Three is still months away from its full theatrical release, but fans are already treating it like the biggest movie event of the year. The final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy has not shown a single frame to the public yet, but that has not stopped audiences from fighting for the chance to see it early. The first major ticket rush in the UK has already shown just how intense the interest has become.

The biggest sign came when tickets went on sale for a special IMAX 70mm preview at BFI IMAX in London. The screening is scheduled for December 15, giving fans a chance to see the movie three days before its planned nationwide UK release on December 18. According to the information reported about the ticket sale, more than 100,000 people entered the online queue for the BFI IMAX event. The huge rush reportedly put serious pressure on ticketing systems, creating a situation similar to the chaos that surrounded IMAX ticket sales for The Odyssey earlier this year.

IMAX 70mm screenings are extremely limited, and Dune: Part Three will have only a small number of locations showing it in that format. The reported worldwide total is just 36 theaters, with 25 in the United States, nine in Canada, one in the UK and one in Australia. For fans who want the biggest possible version of Villeneuve’s final Dune movie, those numbers make the tickets feel even more valuable.

The London screening is also part of a larger preview event taking place across the UK on December 15. Different cinemas will have different formats and showtimes, but the idea is the same: fans can watch the movie before the official December 18 opening. That early access is likely to make the demand even stronger, especially among people who have been following Villeneuve’s version of the Dune story since the first movie arrived.

The third film will continue Paul Atreides’ journey after the events of Dune: Part Two. This time, Villeneuve is adapting Dune Messiah, the second novel in Frank Herbert’s famous series. Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul, with Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and other familiar faces also coming back. The cast also includes Jason Momoa, Isaach De Bankolé and Charlotte Rampling. Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan.
