‘Average Joe’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: Cathy Betrays the Group Again

‘Average Joe’ Season 2 is getting closer to the finish line, and Episode 5 takes a short break from the nonstop action to focus on the people caught in the middle of all the chaos. Joe, Leon, and Touch are still trying to follow Teddy’s trail, but the episode makes it clear that their biggest problems are not only coming from Sipho. Some of them are coming from inside the group.

The episode begins with Imani still in danger after the previous episode ended on a cliffhanger. Joe does not waste much time before going after her. He races through the streets while Imani does her best to survive on her own, leading to a violent chase that gives the episode an explosive opening. There are plenty of messy moments and some of the dark humor that fans have come to expect from the series.

Once that chase is over, though, the episode takes a very different direction. Instead of throwing another big fight at the characters, the story slows down and starts looking at what made them who they are. One of the biggest surprises comes from Sipho, whose past gives viewers a much better idea of why he became such a dangerous man.

A flashback shows Sipho as a young boy who witnesses his mother being murdered inside a church. The man responsible then forces the child into an impossible situation, leaving him covered in his mother’s blood. When Sipho eventually gets the chance to fight back, he kills the man and takes his name. From there, he slowly grows into the crime boss that Joe and the others are now trying to survive.

The episode also spends time on Touch and Phyllis. Their relationship has been developing throughout the season, but Episode 5 finally explains why Phyllis has been so determined to help him. She has experienced a huge loss of her own after the death of her sister, Donna. Instead of allowing that pain to consume her, Phyllis turned it into a reason to help people who others might have given up on.

That part of her story leads to one of the episode’s most emotional scenes. Phyllis experiences a spiritual vision involving Donna, who tells her that the truth will set Touch free. The message seems to reach Touch at exactly the right time because he finally decides to stop hiding things from Joe and Leon.

Touch tells the two men what he has been keeping from them. Considering everything the group has been through, it would have been easy for Joe and Leon to turn against him. Instead, they accept him. The three men embrace, creating a surprisingly warm moment in an episode filled with violence and betrayal.

Then Cathy comes along and ruins the good feeling.

Cathy starts the episode by apologizing to Joe and the others for the things she has done in the past. For a moment, it looks like she may finally be ready to earn their trust again. But she quickly goes behind their backs. While the group is investigating the dangerous bar connected to Teddy’s trail, Cathy calls the police, putting the entire operation at risk.

We have to point out how frustrating this cycle has become. Cathy apologizes, seems ready to change, and then makes another move that hurts the group. The review also leaves open the possibility that there could be more behind her actions. Maybe she has a plan that has not been revealed yet, or maybe she is simply making selfish choices.

That question could become important as the season moves toward its final episodes. Cathy remains one of the show’s biggest question marks, while Sipho is becoming more unstable and Joe’s group is still trying to understand what Teddy left behind.

The episode does not completely lose its lighter side, either. Joe, Leon, and Touch get into a funny discussion about R&B singers during a group singalong. It is a small scene, but it fits the show’s style perfectly. Even when these characters are surrounded by danger, they can still find time to joke around.

With new episodes of ‘Average Joe’ continuing weekly on Paramount+ through September 30, there is not much time left for the group to solve the Teddy mystery. Touch has finally started being honest with his friends, but Cathy may have just made their situation even more dangerous. And with Sipho’s past now exposed, the fight ahead could become even more personal.
