Brad Pitt Still Regrets His Breakout Role in This Classic Movie, Decades Later

Brad Pitt has played plenty of characters that fans still talk about years later. From intense action roles to dramatic performances, he has built a career filled with movies that helped make him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. But there is one early performance that Pitt still looks back on with regret, even though the movie itself became a classic.

The film is Robert Redford’s 1992 drama ‘A River Runs Through It.’ The movie tells the story of two brothers, Norman and Paul Maclean, who grow up in Montana in a strict but loving family. Craig Sheffer plays Norman, while Pitt takes on the role of Paul, the more reckless brother whose life slowly begins to fall apart.

For Pitt, the movie was a huge opportunity. Redford was already a major Hollywood name, and the chance to work with him was something the young actor took very seriously. There was just one problem. Pitt felt that he wasn’t ready for the role.

Years after the movie came out, Pitt admitted that he still wasn’t happy with his performance. In a 2011 interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Giles, the actor opened up about why he believed he could have done much better.

“Robert Redford made a quality movie,” Pitt said. “But I don’t think I was skilled enough. I think I could have done better. Maybe it was the pressure of the part, and playing someone who was a real person—and the family was around occasionally—and not wanting to let Redford down. But again, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it.”

The pressure came from several directions. Pitt wasn’t simply playing a fictional character. Paul Maclean was based on a real person, and members of the family connected to the story were sometimes around during production. That made Pitt even more aware of how important it was to get the character right.

Working with Redford also added another layer. Pitt had grown up watching Redford, along with stars like Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood. Suddenly, he was working with one of the actors he had admired for years. For someone still finding his way as an actor, that could easily become intimidating.

There was also the growing comparison between Pitt and Redford. As Pitt became more popular, people started pointing out similarities between the two stars. While that comparison was obviously a compliment, it also created pressure. Pitt wanted to become his own kind of actor instead of simply being seen as a younger version of someone he admired.

Interestingly, Pitt’s opinion of his performance is very different from the way many people remember the movie. ‘A River Runs Through It’ helped push him into the spotlight and became one of the key films of his early career. The movie won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and Pitt’s performance as Paul became an important part of his rise to stardom.

His chemistry with Sheffer also helped make the relationship between the brothers feel believable. Paul is charming and exciting, but he is also troubled, and the film slowly shows how his choices affect the people closest to him.

That makes Pitt’s comments especially interesting. Looking back, he sees mistakes that audiences may not notice at all. Instead of celebrating the role as one of the performances that helped launch his career, Pitt seems to focus on what he believes he could have done differently.

His comments also show how actors can be much harder on themselves than audiences are. A performance that looks natural to viewers can feel completely different to the person giving it. Pitt was still developing his skills at the time, and the experience clearly stayed with him.

More than 30 years later, ‘A River Runs Through It’ remains an important part of Pitt’s career. It helped introduce him to a much bigger audience and showed that he could handle more serious roles. Yet, despite everything the movie accomplished for him, Pitt still seems to believe he left something on the table.

Maybe that’s what makes his comments so relatable. Even after becoming one of the biggest stars in the world, Pitt can still watch an old performance and think, “I could have done that better.” For him, the movie may be a classic, but his own performance is still something he wishes he could revisit.
