Jennifer Lawrence has finally done something many fans probably stopped expecting years ago: she joined Instagram. And after spending so much time avoiding social media, the actress made sure her first post was very much in line with everything she has said about the internet over the years.

Lawrence officially launched her verified Instagram account, @jlaw, on Wednesday, September 9. She had already made it clear that social media was never really her thing, so seeing her suddenly appear on Instagram quickly became a big deal among fans. Her account gained hundreds of thousands of followers within hours, even before she shared a single post.

Then came the post everyone was waiting for.

Instead of sharing a glamorous photo, a movie announcement, or a carefully planned celebrity selfie, Lawrence posted a short video joking about how quickly she might leave Instagram if people start being mean to her. It was a pretty perfect introduction for an actress who has never hidden how much online criticism can get to her.

Her first Instagram move also connects nicely to comments she has made about social media in the past. In 2014, Lawrence told BBC Radio 1 that she would “never get Twitter.” She even joked that if people ever found an account pretending to be her, it “most certainly” wasn’t her.

Things changed a little over time. In a 2018 interview with InStyle, Lawrence admitted that she did use social media, but mostly as a silent observer. She described herself as a “voyeur,” watching what other people were posting without becoming part of the conversation herself.

She has also talked about having an anonymous TikTok account. According to Lawrence, she sometimes used it to read comments and even got involved in arguments without anyone knowing it was actually her. So while she may have avoided having a public social media presence, she clearly knew what was happening online.

Her new Instagram account also gives fans a glimpse at the small group of people she follows. At the time of the account’s launch, that list included only 45 accounts. Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, who are connected to her upcoming movie What Happens at Night. Longtime friends Dakota Johnson and Suki Waterhouse are also on the list.

Still, the biggest reason Lawrence has stayed away from social media appears to be the negativity that can come with being famous online. She has spoken openly about how criticism affected her during some of the hardest periods of her career.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence looked back at the time when she made 16 movies in six years, several of which did not perform as well as expected. She said she eventually felt like people had simply become tired of seeing her. Even showing up at a red carpet could leave her feeling like she was going to be criticized.

Lawrence has also admitted that she used to Google herself and search for cruel things people had written about her. At one point, she even searched her name alongside the word “ugly.” Looking back, she recognized that this was not a healthy habit.

That history makes her first Instagram post feel even more fitting. Rather than pretending she is suddenly comfortable with everything that comes with being online, Lawrence is making fun of the situation and acknowledging her fears.

For now, though, fans seem thrilled that she finally decided to join the platform. The big question is whether she will actually become an active Instagram user or disappear after a few posts and return to quietly watching from the sidelines.

Either way, Lawrence has already managed to make her Instagram debut feel different from the usual celebrity launch. After more than a decade of avoiding the spotlight on social media, she finally stepped into it on her own terms.
